No. 21 Baseball Uses Last At-Bat To Turn Back IUP, Clinch Series

PEMBROKEEthan Baucom's RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning brought Roberto Rivera racing home with the game-winning run and the 21st-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team rallied back from an early four-run deficit to stun IUP, 7-6, on Friday evening at Sammy Cox Field.

Rivera drove in a pair of runs and scored three times on a perfect 2-for-2 night at the plate to pace the Braves (5-0), while Jarratt Mobley turned in three hits on four trips to the plate for the hosts. Baucom doubled and scored once on a 2-for-3 hitting line, while freshman Trey Jacobs hit his first collegiate home run as well.

Chris Eisel (2-for-4, 2 R) and Corey Wheeler (1-for-3) both hit doubles for the Crimson Hawks (0-2), while Ted DeSanti drove in two on a 1-for-3 night at the plate.

Gunner Deal (2-0) picked up his second victory in as many relief appearances for the Black & Gold, this time striking out four and allowing just two hits and a lone earned run in two innings of work. J.P. Pellis (0-1) took the loss for the visitors despite not allowing a hit in 1-1/3 innings of relief.

The Crimson Hawks scored twice in both the second and third innings, and then took a 5-1 lead on Chris Calliari's solo homer in the fifth, but the Braves got a two-run bomb from Rivera in the bottom of the fourth, and then grabbed a 6-5 advantage on a 3-run blast by Jacobs in the fifth.

Deal sat down the first two IUP batters in the sixth to assert his will, but the Crimson Hawks loaded the bases with their next three at-bats, and then brought the tying run across when Deal plunked Anthony Rigous on a 2-and-1 offering.

Rivera walked to lead off the bottom of the frame, and then got into position by stealing second minutes later. IUP reliever Travis Holman got Mobley on a full-count fly out with the next at-bat, but Baucom laced a 1-and-1 offering down the third base line to finish off the opportunity.

The Braves will look to complete its second series sweep of the season on Saturday when they close out the weekend against IUP with a 1 p.m. contest at Sammy Cox Field.
