No. 21 Baseball Rattles Lander In Series Opener

PEMBROKE – The 21st-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team hit .458 with runners in scoring position and crossed the plate 11 times in the last three innings on the way to a series-opening 18-8 victory over Lander on Friday evening at Sammy Cox Field.

Seven players registered multi-hit nights at the plate for the Braves (9-1, 3-1 PBC) who put up season highs in both the hits and the runs column in the outing. Luke Jackson homered and drove in a career-best six runs on a 3-for-6 night at the plate, while freshman Trey Jacobs turned in a 4-for-5 hitting line for the hosts. Ethan Baucom hit his third four-bagger of the season and scored four times on a 3-for-5 performance as well.

Carson Jones hit a pair of solo homers for the Bearcats (5-6, 1-3), who got solo blasts from three other players as well.

Anthony Burke (3-0) matched a career high with 10 strikeouts and has now posted win in nine of his last 11 starts for the Black & Gold dating back to last season. Hank Simpson struck out five in three innings of relief work on the way to picking up his second save of the campaign.

Reliever Harper Grier (0-1) recorded just one out in the sixth and took the loss for Lander after surrendering four earned runs on as many hits as well.

The Braves plated multiple runs in each of the first three innings to take a 7-1 advantage, but the Bearcats used the long ball to tack up four runs in the fourth and then crossed the plate once in each of the next two frames to knot the score up. UNCP would answer, however, with six hits and five runs in the bottom of the sixth to go out in front for good.

The Braves and Bearcats will continue their weekend series on Saturday at Sammy Cox Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
