No. 21 Baseball Tops Lander Again, Clinches Series

BREAKING: Sunday's series finale now scheduled for 11:30 a.m. first pitch due to rain forecast.

PEMBROKE – The 21st-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team pounded out 15 hits and scored 12 times in the first five innings along behind a solid outing from freshman southpaw Landen Smith, and the Braves cruised to a series-clinching 14-6 victory over visiting Lander on Saturday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.

Seven players registered multiple hits for the second-straight game to pace the Braves (10-1, 4-1 PBC) who have outscored the Bearcats (5-7, 1-4) 32-14 in the first two games of the weekend set. Ethan Baucom homered for the second-straight day to highlight a 2-for-4, 4-RBI day at the plate, while Seth Hartings hit his second home run of the season to earmark a 3-for-5, 3-RBI hitting line. Luke Jackson (3-for-5) turned in a trio of hits for the hosts as well.

Vincent Addona drove in a two runs on a 3-for-5 plate performance to pace the Bearcats, while Bailey Connell homered on a 1-for-3 day at the plate as well.

Smith (1-0) struck out nine and scattered seven hits over five quality innings of work to grab his first collegiate victory, while the Braves also got solid shutout relief work from both Dale Masterson (1.1 IP, K) and newcomer A.J. Stead (1.2 IP, 2 K) as well. J.D. Cook (1-3) took the loss for the visitors after surrendering eight runs (six earned) and 12 hits in just four innings from the mound.

Baucom crushed a 2-and-0 offering from Cook over the wall in leftfield with two outs in the bottom of the first to give UNCP the lead for good, but the Braves sent their entire order to the plate in a 5-run third inning just to make sure. The Bearcats cut into an 8-0 deficit with four runs in the top of the fourth, but the Braves answered with four of their own in the bottom of the frame to keep the visitors at bay.

UNCP will close out its weekend series with Lander on Sunday at Sammy Cox Field. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
