No. 29 Baseball Rallies Late To Turn Back No. 22 Wingate

PEMBROKE – Twenty-second ranked Wingate rallied back from a big deficit with six runs in the sixth inning, but Roberto Rivera's RBI single in the bottom of the frame put the No. 29 UNC Pembroke baseball team up for good as the Braves improved to 12-1 at home this season with a 9-6 victory over the Bulldogs on Tuesday.

The triumph snapped a two-game skid for the Black & Gold (14-5) who has now captured 27 of the last 30 matchups in the series with their U.S. 74 rivals. The setback snapped a three-game win streak for Wingate (18-6) who is just 2-4 in true road games this season.

Connor Grainger doubled in a run and scored once on a 3-for-4 night for the hosts, while Rivera (2 RBI) walked and singled twice on a 2-for-4 hitting line. Seth Hartings (2-for-4) singled and scored in both the fourth and sixth frames for the Braves as well.

Tanner Forry tripled in a pair of runs on a 1-for-5 night to lead the visitors, while Brett Branton doubled to highlight a 2-for-4 plate performance.

Hank Simpson (1-1) struck out four and allowed just one hit in two innings of relief to pick up the victory for the hosts, while Gunner Deal retired the side in order in the ninth to pick up his first save of the season. Starter Cole Lovin struck out four and allowed just one hit in three innings of work, while Thomas DuRant highlighted two innings of relief with a 9-pitch, 3-strikeout fourth inning, but neither pitcher was awarded a decision.

Austin Turgeon (1-2) allowed just two hits in 2-1/3 innings of relief, but saddled the tough-luck loss after surrendering a lone unearned run in the sixth.

A sac fly from Trevor Clemons with one out in the fourth helped the Braves stake claim to a 6-0 advantage, but the Bulldogs sent their entire order to the plate in the sixth on the way to evening things back up. Hartings singled to lead off the bottom half of the inning, however, and moved over to third base via a passed ball and a wild pitch to set the table for Rivera's RBI single through the left side. Ethan Baucom hit a two-run blast in the seventh to complete the scoring.

Ty Andrus hit a full-count single to lead off the game for the Bulldogs, but that would be all the offense Wingate could muster against Lovin. The Fairmont native would allow just one more base runner via a fielding error in the third before giving way to DuRant. Durant, a Chapin, S.C., product, struck out the side in the fourth, and allowed a two-out hit in the fourth.

The Braves will be back in action again on Friday when they travel to Winston-Salem State (14-7) for a 4 p.m. doubleheader at BB&T Ballpark. The squads will finish off their weekend series with a 4 p.m. single game on Saturday at Sammy Cox Field in Pembroke.
