Burke, No. 29 Baseball Take Series Opener At Winston-Salem State

WINSTON-SALEM – Senior right-hander Anthony Burke struck out a career high 13 batters across his first career complete game outing of the season to lead the 29th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team to a 3-1 victory in the front half of a series-opening doubleheader against Winston-Salem State on Friday.

Luke Jackson singled, tripled and scored the eventual game-winning run in the fourth inning to highlight a 3-for-3 day at the plate and lead the way for the UNCP (15-5) offense. Connor Grainger singled in a run in the sixth on a 2-for-4 outing for the visitors as well.

Emilio Abreu hit solo homer in the seventh to earmark a 2-for-3 hitting line for the Rams (16-8).

Burke (4-1) threw 114 pitches, including 89 for strikes, on the way to going the distance for the Black & Gold, while also tacking up his fourth career double-digit strikeout performance as well. Seth Reeves (2-2) surrendered three runs (two earned) on eight hits in six innings of work for the hosts. He also struck out four.

Luke Jackson singled in Trey Jacobs to give the Braves the lead for good in the fourth, and later scored on a costly fielding error by Winston-Salem State later in the frame. Jackson tripled to lead off the sixth, and Grainger laced Reeves' first offering in the next at-bat into left field to extend the lead out to a trio of runs.

Abreu hit a one-out solo homer in the seventh to spoil the shutout, however.

Burke faced four or less batters in eight different frames, and retired the last seven batters he faced. He finished off his gem with three swinging strikeouts in the ninth as well.
