No. 29 Baseball Tops Winston-Salem State In Nightcap, Clinches Series

WINSTON-SALEM – The 29th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team erupted for 11 runs on nine hits in the first four innings alone and finished off a series-opening doubleheader sweep of Winston-Salem State with a 12-6 win over the Rams on Friday evening at BB&T Ballpark.

Roberto Rivera (3-for-3, 3 R) walked twice and singled three times to turn in a perfect night at the plate for the Braves (16-5), while Connor Grainger walked, homered and scored twice to highlight a 2-for-4 showing for the visitors. Ethan Baucom (2-for-5, 2 RBI) and Luke Jackson (2-for-5, R) both turned in a pair of hits as well.

Randal Ortiz walked and doubled in a pair of runs on a 2-for-2 night for the Rams (16-9), while Wellington Guzman hit a 2-run homer to highlight a 1-for-3 hitting line.

Trace Hagler (2-0) struck out four over 2-1/3 innings of hitless relief to grab the win for the Black & Gold. WSSU starter Cole Parks (2-1) surrendered five earned runs on three hits in just 1-1/3 innings of work to saddle the loss for the hosts.

Grainger gave the Braves a lead they would not relinquish on a two-run double in the first, but UNCP eventually cushioned its lead out to 11-2 in the top of the fourth. The Rams cut into their deficit with four runs of their own in the bottom of the frame to chase UNCP starter Landen Smith from the hill, but Hagler came on to stop the bleeding.

A RBI double from Trey Jacobs in the sixth capped the scoring on the night.

The squads will close out their home-and-home series on Saturday when UNCP plays host to the series finale at Sammy Cox Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
