YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Senior hurler
Anthony Burke turned in his best outing of the season on the mound, but host Young Harris erased a 4-1 deficit in the ninth inning capped off by a walk-off grand slam to snap a four-game losing streak and knock off the No. 12 UNC Pembroke baseball team 8-4 on Friday evening at Zell B. Miller Field.
Friday marked the 13th-straight game with at least eight hits for the Braves (11-2, 5-2 PBC) who were on the road for the first time after 12 games at Sammy Cox Field to begin the campaign. The Black & Gold saw its five-game winning streak come to an end, while the Mountain Lions (7-9, 3-4 PBC) scored at least eight runs for the first time in their last six outings.
Burke completed eight innings for the first time this season and third time in his career, while striking out eight and surrendering just one run on five hits. A quartet of Braves' pitchers allowed seven runs on four hits, two walks, an error and a hit batter in the ninth.
With the bases juiced and no outs in the ninth, junior
A.J. Stead induced a 6-4-3 double play that left UNCP one out from its sixth-straight victory. But the next six Young Harris batters reached, including a costly error with the Braves up 4-3, to complete the most improbable of comebacks. Sophomore
Cole Lovin (1-1) was saddled with the tough-luck loss for UNCP after allowing three unearned runs on no hits in the ninth.
Jackson Jones' only hit of the night was the four-bagger in the ninth for Young Harris, while Bradley Klees turned in a 2-for-3 performance at the dish for the hosts, including a solo home run in the seventh.
Trey Jacobs and
Seth Hartings each logged a pair of hits and an RBI for the Black & Gold and Hartings lifted his third home run of the season to right center in the fourth. Jacobs doubled home a run in the sixth and
Connor Grainger capped off the UNCP scoring with an RBI single in the same frame.
The Braves and Mountain Lions will continue their weekend series on Saturday at Zell. B. Miller Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
