Young Harris Upsets No. 12 Baseball Again, Clinches Series

March 3, 2018

Box Score YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris plated multiple runs in four different frames behind a solid outing from right-hander Mat Szabo to help the Mountain Lions upset the No. 12 UNC Pembroke baseball team for the second-straight day with a series-clinching 10-4 win over the Braves on Saturday at Zell B. Miller Field.

Trevor Clemons doubled in a pair of runs on a 2-for-4 outing to pace the Braves (11-3, 5-3 PBC), while Kevon Perkins doubled and scored a pair of runs on a 2-for-4 hitting line as well. Rudy Gaona doubled, tripled and drove in five runs on a 3-for-5 day at the plate for Young Harris (8-9, 4-4), while Cory Ewald doubled in a pair of runs and scored three times on a 2-for-4 performance.

Landen Smith (1-1) took the loss for the Black & Gold after allowing six earned runs on as many hits in 4-1/3 innings of work. Szabo (2-1) struck out eight and allowed just two earned runs in 6-2/3 innings from the hill on the way to earning the win for the hosts.

The Mountain Lions plated a lone run on a fielder's choice RBI in the second, but led 4-0 after three thanks to a run-scoring single by Ewald and a two-run triple from Gaona. The Braves finally got on the board via a RBI single from Jarratt Mobley with one out in the fifth, but Young Harris answered with two of their own in the bottom of the frame to go out in front 6-1.

UNCP plated lone runs in the sixth and seventh frames, but the hosts kept the Braves at arm's length with two runs in the sixth and eighth innings.

The Braves will look to salvage the weekend series when they meet Young Harris in Sunday's series finale at Zell B. Miller Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
