No. 29 Georgia College Slips By No. 25 Baseball In Pitchers’ Duel

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Cal Gentry's RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth brought home Garrett Green with the game-winning score as 29th-ranked Georgia College slipped past the 25th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team, 2-1, on Friday evening at John Kurtz Field.

The setback snapped a five-game win streak for the Braves (18-6, 6-6 PBC), while Georgia College has now captured eight of its last nine outings.

UNCP tacked up 11 base hits on the night, all singles, including three off the bat of Seth Hartings (3-for-5), while Ethan Baucom (2-for-4) and Trevor Clemons (2-for-5) both turned in a pair of hits as well. Trey Jacobs (1-for-4, RBI) knocked in the only run of the game for the Black & Gold on a fielder's choice in the third.

Brendan Holler singled and doubled on three trips to the plate to pace the Bobcats, while Wesley Wommack doubled to highlight a 2-for-4 night at the plate.

Senior right-hander Anthony Burke (4-2) went the distance for the second time in a week, but this time was handed the tough-luck loss despite striking out two Bobcats and surrendering just a pair of runs. Reliever Bradley Cammack (6-1) struck out three and walked two in 1-1/3 innings of work to grab the win for the hosts. PBC wins leader Charlie Hecht allowed a season-high 10 hits in 7-2/3 innings from the hill, but was not awarded a decision.

Logan Mattix's sac fly in the first inning gave Georgia College a quick lead, but that would be all the hosts could muster for the next eight innings before the dramatics in the ninth. UNCP tied it up on a run-scoring knock by Jacobs in the third, and had its chances to win late, but were unable to find the key hits the rest of the way out.

The Braves stranded 13 on the base paths on the night, and went 0-for-12 at the plate with runners in scoring position.

The squads will close out their weekend series on Saturday with a doubleheader at John Kurtz Field. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
