Baseball Uses Big Third Inning To Rout Chowan In Twinbill Opener

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke baseball team sent 15 batters to the plate amid an 8-hit, 11-run outburst in the third inning to key a 15-6 victory over Chowan in the front half of a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader at Sammy Cox Field.

Trey Jacobs doubled twice and scored three times to highlight a perfect 4-for-4 night at the plate for the Braves (19-8) who stretched their home win streak out to 10 games with the result. Jarratt Mobley (2-for-4, 4 RBI) hit a grand slam in the explosive third inning as well.

Harry Markotay doubled twice and scored once on a 3-for-4 outing for the Hawks (11-13-1) who had their three-game win streak halted with the setback.

A.J. Stead (1-0) struck out one and scattered six hits across an effective four innings from the hill to grab his first decision in the Black & Gold, while freshman Davis Hurd picked up his first collegiate save with three scoreless innings of relief. He also struck out three. Southpaw Cody Smith (1-3) took the loss for the visitors after allowing 12 runs (three earned) on seven hits in 2-2/3 innings of work.

Jacobs plated Roberto Rivera on a one-out ground-rule double, and Trevor Clemons scored later in the frame on a wild pitch by Smith to give the hosts a quick 2-0 lead. The dam would burst in the third, however, as UNCP scored 11 more runs, including nine with two outs showing on the rightfield scoreboard.

The Hawks led off the fourth with five-straight hits and severely cut into their deficit by crossing the plate five times in the frame, but the Braves added an insurance score in the bottom of the frame, and then climbed on
Hurd's back the rest of the way out.
