Baseball Rallies Back From Early Deficit To Thwart Chowan

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke baseball team rallied all the way back from a 7-2 deficit in the third inning, and then used a walk-off homer from Trey Jacobs in the bottom of the seventh to complete a doubleheader sweep of visiting Chowan with an 8-7 victory over the Hawks on Tuesday evening at Sammy Cox Field.

It was the 11th-straight home win for the Braves (20-8) who improved to 16-1 at Sammy Cox Field this season with the result as well. Chowan (11-14-1) dropped its 18th-straight game in the series with the Black & Gold, and has not tasted victory against UNCP since a 5-4 home win on April 10, 2008.

The walk-off dinger highlighted a 3-for-4, 3-run night for Jacobs who was one of five Braves to register multiple-hit showings at the plate. Luke Jackson walked, drove in a run and scored twice to earmark a perfect 2-for-2 hitting line for the hosts as well. Four different players registered two hits apiece for Chowan, including Julian Lopez who doubled in a pair of runs and scored twice on a 2-for-3 hitting line.

Hank Simpson (3-2) worked a scoreless seventh inning to grab the win for the Braves who used six pitchers in the outing. Thomas DuRant, Trace Hagler and Landen Smith all worked a scoreless inning of relief as well. Reliever Ryan Gallacio (1-3) recorded just one for the visitors and took the loss after surrendering the four-bagger to lead off the seventh.

Chowan strung together five hits on the way to putting up three runs in the first, and then added four more scores in the third to build a seemingly comfortable 7-2 advantage. UNCP would chip away at its deficit, however, and eventually evened things back up on a wild pitch in the sixth, as well as an ensuing RBI single from Roberto Rivera.

The comeback was completed in the seventh when Jacobs hammered a 3-and-1 offering from Gallacio over the wall in rightfield.

The Braves will close out a five-game home stand on Thursday when it opens up a three-game Peach Belt Conference series against USC Aiken (20-9, 10-4 PBC) at Sammy Cox Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
