Baseball Uses Grainger’s Walk-Off To Stun No. 15 USC Aiken

PEMBROKE – Daulton Weeks hit his second two-run home run of the game to give 15th-ranked USC Aiken a 5-4 advantage in the top of the eighth inning, but the UNC Pembroke baseball team used a two-run double from Connor Grainger with one out in the ninth to stun the Pacers, 6-5, on Thursday evening at Sammy Cox Field.

It was the third walk-off win in the last four home games for the Braves (21-8, 7-8 PBC) who have now captured their last 11 games in Pembroke. It was the second-straight loss for the Pacers (20-11, 11-5) who are coming off a three-game sweep of then-No. 9 Columbus State last weekend at home.

Roberto Rivera doubled, triples and scored the game-winning run in the ninth to highlight a 2-for-3 night at the plate for the Black & Gold, while Trey Jacobs continued a torrid week at the plate by doubling and homering on a 2-for-4 hitting line. Jarratt Mobley (2-for-4) turned in a pair of hits as well, while Kevon Perkins walked twice and was hit by pitch once on four trips to the plate.

Weeks (3-for-4, 4 RBI) doubled as well to lead the offensive attack for the visitors, while Jose Bonilla tripled and scored twice to earmark a 3-for-5 night at the dish.

Gunner Deal (5-1) surrendered a one-run lead in the eighth, but still picked up the victory after striking out five in two innings of relief for the Black & Gold. Starter Anthony Burke struck out three and scattered seven hits across seven strong innings from the hill, but settled for a no decision for the third time this season.

Brooks Calvo (2-2) did not surrender a hit in 1-1/3 innings of relief for the visitors, but took the loss anyway after walking and plunking a batter in the ninth.

UNCP grabbed its first lead of the contest, 2-1, via a solo homer from Jacobs in the fourth, but Weeks willed a two-run homer over the wall in centerfield to give the Pacers a 3-2 advantage in the sixth. Seth Hartings hit a two-out RBI single to knot the game back up in the sixth, and Perkins scored on a wild pitch later in the frame to swing the momentum back in favor of the hosts.

Bonilla singled to lead off the eighth, and Weeks homered moments later off of a 2-and-2 offering from Deal to give USC Aiken a 5-4 advantage. Perkins was hit by pitch to lead off the ninth, and Rivera drew a five-pitch walk with the next at-bat to put the winning run aboard. A sac bunt from Trevor Clemons would eventually set the stage for Grainger's dramatics.

The Braves and Pacers will continue their three-game Peach Belt Conference series on Friday evening at Sammy Cox Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday's series finale is slated for a 2 p.m. start.
