Smith’s Gem Lifts Baseball Past No. 15 USC Aiken Again

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke baseball team tacked up five runs in the first two innings to help support a season-long outing from freshman southpaw Landen Smith and the Braves cruised to a series-clinching 8-3 win over 15th-ranked USC Aiken on Friday evening at Sammy Cox Field.

It was the 12th-straight home win for the Braves (22-8, 8-8 PBC) who registered their first series win over the Pacers since 2008 in the process as well. It is just the second league series loss of the season for the Pacers (20-12, 11-6) who were sent tumbling to their third loss in as many days as well.

It was the first home series win for the Braves against USC Aiken since 2004.

Eight different players registered at least one base hit on the night for the hosts, including senior Roberto Rivera who walked and singled three times on the way to a 3-for-4 night at the plate. Luke Jackson (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and Connor Grainger (1-for-3, 3 RBI) both hit home runs for the hosts as well.

Daulton Weeks (2-for-4) and Joey Smithers (1-for-4) both turned in lone RBI for the visitors who also got a 2-for-4 performance from Brian Parreira.

Smith (2-1) struck out seven and scattered three hits across 6-1/3 scoreless innings of work to pick up his first victory since a February 24 home win over Lander. Hank Simpson recorded the last four outs of the contest for the Black & Gold, including two via strikeout, but was not awarded a decision.

Reigning PBC Pitcher of the Week honoree Mitch Spence (2-4) surrendered six earned runs on 11 hits in six innings of work to saddle the loss for the Pacers. He also struck out six.

Grainger opened up the scoring with a two-run blast in the first, but UNCP had stretched its advantage out to 4-0 by the end of the frame thanks to a RBI double from Ethan Baucom and a run-scoring single from Seth Hartings. The Braves would eventually pad its lead out to 8-0 after a towering 2-run dinger from Jackson in the seventh.

Smith set the tone by striking out the side in the first inning and did not allow a hit until Brady O'Neil's leadoff single in the third. Smith would induce a double play on the very next pitch to clear the paths. The freshman from Archdale allowed just four base runners on the night before giving way to Trace Hagler with one out in the seventh.

UNCP will close out its weekend set with the nationally-ranked Pacers on Saturday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
