No. 15 USC Aiken Powers Past Baseball In Series Finale, Avoids Sweep

PEMBROKELuke Jackson's RBI single in the bottom of the fourth helped the UNC Pembroke baseball team trim an early two-run deficit in half, but 15th-ranked USC Aiken hit multi-run home runs in each of the next four innings to fuel a 12-2 victory for the Pacers in Saturday's series finale at Sammy Cox Field.

The setback snapped a 12-game home win streak for the Braves (22-9, 8-9 PBC) who won each of the first two games of the set to register its first series victory over USC Aiken since 2008. The triumph put the lid on a three-game losing skid for the Pacers (21-12, 12-6).

Kevon Perkins walked twice and hit his first home run of the season to highlight a perfect 2-for-2 outing, while Luke Jackson (2-for-4) turned in the only other multi-hit showing of the day for the hosts. Four different players hit homers for USC Aiken, including Brian Parreira (2-for-4) who drove in five runs on a pair of blasts.

Gunner Deal (5-2), who picked up the win in the series opener with the Pacers, was dealt the loss this time around after surrendering five earned runs on six hits in a season-long five innings from the hill. He also struck out three. Starter Christian Aragon (5-1) scattered seven hits and a pair of earned runs across five innings of work to grab the victory for the visitors.

USC Aiken grabbed an early 2-0 advantage by virtue of a pair of sacrifice flies in the top of the first, but the Braves hung around until the fourth inning when Jackson's knock brought them within a run. Parreira hit a 3-run homer in the fifth to give the Pacers some breathing room, but USC Aiken added insurance runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings thanks to homers from Philip Watcher, Joey Smithers and Daulton Weeks, respectively.

The Braves will close out a five-game home stand on Tuesday when they suit up to take on St. Augustine's (10-17) in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Sammy Cox Field.
