No. 24 Baseball Runs Away Early, Topples St. Augustine’s

PEMBROKE – The 24th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team scored five runs in the opening frame and never looked back as the Braves used a trio of multiple-run innings to rout St. Augustine's, 13-4, in the opening game of a Tuesday afternoon twinbill at Sammy Cox Field.

Reigning Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Week Trey Jacobs doubled in each of his first two at-bats to key a 3-for-4 day at the plate for the Braves (23-9), while Connor Grainger drove in a pair of runs on a similar 3-for-4 outing. Four other players registered at least one base hit for the hosts as well.

Stephon Hines walked and hit a 2-run homer on a 1-for-2 hitting line for the Falcons (11-19).

A.J. Stead (2-0) struck out five and scattered four hits and a trio of runs (two earned) to pick up the win for the Black & Gold. Tyus France (1-3) took the loss for the Falcons after surrendering eight runs (three earned) on just six hits in three innings from the hill.

UNCP took advantage of a trio of hits, three hit batsmen and a pair of walks to plate five runs in the first, and then added runs in each of the next three innings to eventually build its lead out to 13-2. St. Augustine's added lone runs in the fifth and seventh innings to provide the final.
