No. 12 Baseball Slips By Young Harris To Fend Off Weekend Sweep

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga.Kevon Perkins and Connor Grainger registered back-to-back RBI knocks with one out in the seventh to give the 12th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team the lead for good as the Braves battled back from a pair of deficits to slip by Young Harris, 9-8, in the series finale on Sunday at Zell B. Miller Field.

Luke Jackson (1-for-2, 3 RBI) and Trey Jacobs (2-for-4, 2 RBI) both hit home runs to fuel a 13-hit attack for the Braves (12-3, 6-3 PBC) who avoided a weekend sweep with Sunday's result. Perkins (2-for-4, 2B) and Trevor Clemons (2-for-4, R) both turned in a pair of hits for the visitors as well.

Rudy Gaona walked and singled twice on a perfect 2-for-2 day at the plate for the Mountain Lions (8-10, 4-5), while Cory Ewald doubled and drove in four runs on a 1-for-3 day at the plate.

Gunner Deal (2-0) struck out five and surrendered just one hit in six innings of relief to grab his second win of the season for the Black & Gold. Steven Eichhorn (0-1) surrendered two earned runs on four hits in 2-2/3 innings of relief work to saddle the loss for Young Harris. He also struck out three.

UNCP grabbed the momentum early with four runs in the top of the first inning, but the Mountain Lions plated three in the bottom of the frame, and then took a 7-3 lead with four more in the second. UNCP pushed across a pair of runs in the third, and then tied the game back up on a two-out RBI single from Jacobs in the fourth, but Young Harris went out in front again on a RBI double from Bradley Klees in the bottom half of that inning.

Jarratt Mobley doubled to start the seventh for the Black & Gold and then stole third to set the table for dramatics by Grainger and Perkins. Corley Reynolds got aboard for the Mountain Lions via a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth and moved to third via a wild pitch and a groundout, but Deal induced a game-ending flyout to seal the outcome moments later.

The Braves will continue their seven-game road trip on Wednesday when they head to Hartsville, S.C., to take on Coker (9-7) in a 2 p.m. contest at Tom J. New Field.
