Game Recap: Baseball |

No. 17 Columbus State Tops No. 15 Baseball In Opener

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Mason McClellan hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning and reigning region pitcher of the week Kolton Ingram turned in his second-straight complete game as 17th-ranked Columbus State defeated the 15th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team, 6-1, in the series opener on Friday evening at Burger King Stadium.

Roberto Rivera (2-for-3, R) and Trey Jacobs (2-for-4) both turned in a pair of hits for the Braves (13-4, 6-4 PBC) who plated their lone run of the contest off of a RBI single by from Jarratt Mobley (1-for-4) in the third.

Justin Evans homered and scored twice on a 3-for-4 outing for the Cougars (16-2, 4-0) who have now won 10-straight games. Three other players turned in multiple hits for the hosts as well.

Anthony Burke (3-1) struck out nine Cougars, but surrendered six earned runs on 10 hits in six innings of work on the way to suffering just the second loss of his UNCP career and his first in nearly a calendar year. Ingram (5-0) struck out eight and scattered eight hits over nine innings of work to stay unbeaten in 2018.

McClellan's blast with one out in the bottom of the first gave the Cougars a quick lead, but Mobley chopped that deficit in half with his two-out single in the third. Evans hit a solo homer in the third to push the advantage back out to a pair of runs, and then took a 4-1 lead on a sac fly from Drew Webb in the fourth. Frank Wager's two-run blast in the fifth provided the final.

The squads will continue their weekend series on Saturday with a 2 p.m. contest at Burger King Stadium.
