No. 21 Baseball Rallies To Foil Barton Again, Sweep Season Series

WILSON – The 21st-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team rallied back from a pair of deficits and used a two-out, two-strike single from Trey Jacobs in the ninth to plate the eventual game-winning run in a 7-6 victory over Barton on Tuesday evening at Fleming Stadium.

It was the ninth win in the last 11 outings for the Braves (27-10) who have now captured three of last four away from Pembroke as well. Barton (11-30) has now dropped the last four games in the series with the Black & Gold, with the last three contests being decided by three or less runs.

Trevor Clemons doubled and scored the game-winning run in the ninth to highlight a 2-for-5 night at the plate for UNCP, while Luke Jackson singled three times on four trips to the plate for the visitors as well. Jacobs drove in and scored a run on a 2-for-5 hitting line.

Gatlin Pate drove in a pair of runs and scored twice on a 2-for-5 night for the Bulldogs who got lone base hits from five other players as well.

Trace Hagler (3-1), the fourth of five pitchers on the night for the Black & Gold, struck out a pair of batters across 1-2/3 innings of relief work to pick up the victory, while Gunner Deal tallied his second save of the campaign after working a scoreless ninth. Troy Maslowski (0-3) surrendered four runs (three earned) on four hits and a trio of walks in three innings of relief to take the loss for the hosts.

Content with manufacturing runs early on, Barton used its short game to forge a 1-0 advantage just three at-bats into the bottom of the first, and then got a big hit from starting pitcher Mason Cooper who helped his own cause with a 2-run double. A run-scoring double from Maslowski with two outs in the second would make it a 4-0 contest.

UNCP scored a pair of runs in the fourth, and then plated lone runs in the sixth and seventh innings to knot things back up, but the Bulldogs used a comedy of defensive errors to score twice and retake a two-run advantage. Jackson would score on a wild pitch with one out in the eighth to bring the visitors within striking distance, however.

Kevon Perkins drew a full-count leadoff walk to get something going for UNCP in the ninth, and Clemons laced a one-out double into left field two batters later to put a pair of runners in scoring position for the Braves. Elijah Helton trotted home a short time later on a wild pitch from Maslowski, and Jacobs delivered the goods on an infield single up the middle two pitches later.

The Braves will continue their eight-game road trip this weekend when they head to Dahlonega, Ga., to battle Peach Belt Conference rival North Georgia (21-13, 13-8 PBC) in a pivotal three-game series at Bob Stein Stadium. The squads will open up the weekend with a 6 p.m. tilt on Friday, before closing out the series with single games on both Saturday (3 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.).
