Burke, No. 21 Baseball Blank North Georgia In Series Opener

BREAKING: UNCP's series at North Georgia will now conclude with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday. Rain is expected to move into the Dahlonega, Ga., area on Sunday.

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – A two-out RBI double from Seth Hartings in the top of the third inning proved to be more than enough offense to support a phenomenal performance from right-hander Anthony Burke as the 21st-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team blanked North Georgia, 1-0, in Friday's series opener at Bob Stein Stadium.

It is the 10th victory in the last 12 outings for the Braves (28-10, 11-10 PBC) who have captured five of their last Peach Belt Conference contests as well. The Nighthawks (21-15, 13-9) have now dropped three of their last four contests.

Luke Jackson and Elijah Helton both doubled and turned in 2-for-4 nights at the plate to pace the visitors, while Kevon Perkins walked, was hit by pitch and scored the eventual game-winning run despite a 0-for-1 hitting line. Trey Jacobs had his 23-game hit streak snapped with a 0-for-3 outing, but has still reached base in 36-straight games after drawing a walk in the sixth.

Steven Tomlinson walked and doubled on a 1-for-3 night for North Georgia, who also got a 2-for-4 plate performance from Chase Sudduth.

Burke (6-2) struck out six and threw 117 pitches on the way to tacking up his second-straight complete game outing (6th career), as well as his first career shutout. He has not allowed an earned run over his last 20 innings of work. Freshman Cade Heil (5-5) took the loss for the hosts despite allowing just six hits and a lone earned run in 8-1/3 innings from the hill.

Perkins drew a one-out walk in the third and Hartings laced a single into the outfield two batters later to complete the scoring opportunity and give the Black & Gold the lead for good. UNCP had its chances to add an insurance run when Helton (double) and Perkins (hit by pitch) both reached base to lead off the fifth, but the Nighthawks got a big out when they picked off Helton at second base, and then slammed the door on the threat thanks to a double play moments later. It was one of four double plays turned by North Georgia on the night.

Burke shook off a pair of defensive errors and exited the first inning unscathed, and allowed minimal offense over the next four innings before taking over the night. The Fredericksburg, Va., retired the side in order in both the sixth and seventh innings, and then faced just four batters in a quiet eighth frame.

Tomlinson hit a one-out double in the ninth and moved to third on a wild pitch with two outs, but Burke battled back from a 0-and-2 hole before issuing a game-ending strikeout to Nick Clarno.

The Braves will close out their weekend set with North Georgia on Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Bob Stein Stadium. The series was altered from a normal three-day format in order to avoid expected inclement weather on Sunday.
