Errors Costly As No. 21 Baseball Falls In Series Finale At North Georgia

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Home-standing North Georgia tacked up three unearned runs on a trio of costly errors, including an untimely miscue with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning, to key a 5-4 series-clinching victory over the 21st-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team on Saturday at Bob Stein Stadium.

The setback gave the Braves (28-12, 11-12 PBC) consecutive losses for the first time in three weeks, and snapped a streak of five-straight series wins for the Black & Gold as well. North Georgia (23-15, 15-9) has now split its last six outings.

Seth Hartings drove in and scored once on a 3-for-5 hitting line to pace the Braves, while Ethan Baucom (2-for-5, BB, RBI) and Roberto Rivera (2-for-5, 2 R) both turned in a pair of hits as well. The Nighthawks got 2-for-4 plate performances from both Joshua Profit and Bill LeRoy.

The Braves pounded out four hits and scored three times in the opening frame to take a quick lead, but North Georgia capitalized on a pair of two-out errors by the visitors to plate a pair of runs and get back in it. UNCP pushed its lead back out to a pair of runs on a sac fly from Trey Jacobs in the fifth, but the Nighthawks got the run back in the bottom of the inning thanks to a one-out RBI double by Profit.

Toney retired the first two batters in the eighth, but LeRoy climbed aboard via a single through the left side, and Steven Tomlinson knotted the game up with a double to the gap in right field moments later. Jake Arnold reached via a leadoff hit by pitch in the bottom of the 11th and moved into scoring position seconds later via a sacrifice hit, but Simpson tacked up the second out of the inning via strikeout to calm the nerves.

The tide would turn again with the next at-bat, however, as Profit reached on a throwing error by Simpson and Chase Sudduth laced a walk-off RBI single up the middle to give the hosts the series.

The Braves will close out an eight-game road trip on Tuesday when they make the short trip up U.S. 74 to battle Wingate (32-12) in a 6 p.m. contest at Ron Christopher Stadium.
