Game Recap: Baseball |

No. 24 Baseball Nearly No-Hits No. 20 Wingate, Sweeps Season Series

WINGATE – The 24th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team got home runs from Connor Grainger, Ethan Baucom and Elijah Helton and held 20th-ranked Wingate without a hit for 7-2/3 innings on the way to an 11-0 shutout of the Bulldogs on Tuesday evening at Ron Christopher Stadium.

The triumph snapped a two-game skid for the Black & Gold (29-12) who has now captured 28 of the last 31 matchups in the series with their U.S. 74 rivals dating back to the 2004 season. It was just the second loss in the last six outings for Wingate (33-13) who will wrap up its regular season this weekend against Catawba at home.

Grainger doubled and hit a grand slam to highlight a 2-for-4, 5-RBI night for the visitors, while Helton hit his first home run in the Black & Gold and finished with a similar 2-for-4 hitting line. Trey Jacobs singled twice and scored a pair of runs on a 2-for-5 plate performance.

Wingate mustered just three base runners in the contest, but it was Reece Daniel who broke up UNCP's bid for a no-hitter on a pinch-hit double with two outs in the eighth. Bradley Brown (0-for-2) and Justin Guy also reached base via hit by pitch.

Starter Hank Simpson (4-4) struck out two across three perfect innings to grab the win in a pre-determined rotation for the Braves, with Thomas DuRant striking out a pair in hitless fourth and fifth frames for the visitors. Aaron Biggerstaff struck out five and allowed just one hit over the last four innings of work to pick up his first save of the season.

Nick Stegman (4-2) took the loss for the Bulldogs after allowing four earned runs on five hits in four innings from the hill. He also struck out three.

After a relatively uneventful first inning, the Braves pounded out five-straight hits to start the second, and intermingled the hit parade with Grainger's grand slam to left field. The 4-0 score would hold up until the fifth when Ethan Baucom crushed a 3-run homer to right field, Grainger followed with a RBI double and Helton finished off the 7-run frame with a 3-run shot to the gap in left field.

Brown trotted to first after a hit by pitch to lead off the fifth gave Wingate its first base runner of the contest, but DuRant sat down the next three Bulldogs in order to keep the no-hitter in play. Biggerstaff checked in to start the sixth and retired eighth-straight batters before surrendering Daniels's two-bagger in the eighth, but needed just 19 pitches to record the final four outs of the victory.

The Braves will open up a four-game home stand on Wednesday evening when they welcome Coker (16-23) to Sammy Cox Field. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
