No. 24 Baseball Holds Off Coker To Finish Off Season Sweep

PEMBROKE – The 24th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team pounded out 16 hits, including eight with two outs showing, and plated five insurance runs in their last two at-bats to hold off Coker, 15-9, in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday evening at Sammy Cox Field.

The victory moved the Braves (30-12) to a perfect 19-0 in non-conference play this season, while also giving the Black & Gold its benchmark 30th victory of the campaign as well. It is the 12th time in the last 13 seasons that the program has registered at least 30 wins. The Cobras (16-24), who had won three of their last four outings heading into Wednesday night's tilt, fell to 2-14 away from Hartsville, S.C., this season with the result.

Trey Jacobs homered and drove in six runs on a 3-for-6 outing to lead the hosts, but six other players turned in multi-hit nights at the plate as well. Trevor Clemons walked, doubled in a run and scored four times on a 3-for-4 hitting line as well. Larry McCabe walked, homered and drove in three runs on a 3-for-4 night to lead the Cobras.

A.J. Stead (3-0) struck out two and surrendered just a pair of runs in 2-2/3 innings of work to grab the win in a pre-determined rotation for the hosts, while Gunner Deal struck out four over the last three innings of the contest to notch his third save of the campaign.

Coker starter J.T. Whritner (0-1) was handed his first loss of the season after allowing six earned runs on as many hits in just one inning from the hill.

Coker attempted to set the tone early by plating a pair of runs in the opening frame, but the Braves countered with six scores in the bottom of the first and led 10-3 after scoring a pair of runs in the fourth.

The Cobras scored three times in the fifth, and then pushed lone runs across in the sixth and seventh, to close the gap to a pair of runs, 10-8, before the Braves tacked up five insurance runs in the next two frames to seal the outcome.

UNCP will close out a four-game home stand this weekend when it steps back into Peach Belt Conference play to host Flagler (29-15, 15-9 PBC) in a three-game set at Sammy Cox Field. The squads will open up the weekend with a 7 p.m. contest on Friday, before closing out the series with single games on Saturday (3 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.).
