Burke Goes The Distance Again As No. 24 Baseball Tops Flagler

PEMBROKE – The 24th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team pounded out 19 hits and threw up crooked numbers in four different innings to support right-hander Anthony Burke's third-straight complete game outing and the Braves cruised to a 10-2 victory over visiting Flagler on Friday evening at Sammy Cox Field.

The triumph marked the fourth-straight Peach Belt Conference series-opening victory for the Braves (31-12, 12-12 PBC) who have now won 13 of their last 17 outings as well. It was the third setback in the last four contests for the Saints (29-16, 15-10).

Connor Grainger doubled, homered and drove in four runs on a perfect 4-for-4 night at the plate for UNCP, while Ethan Baucom, Trevor Clemons and Trey Jacobs all turned in 3-for-5 hitting lines for the hosts. Jason Moore homered on a 2-for-4 plate performance to pace Flagler.

Burke (7-2) tossed 123 pitches (87 for strikes) and struck out seven over nine strong innings from the hill to pick up the win for the third time in his last three decisions. The Fredericksburg, Va., native scattered seven hits and a pair of earned runs across the gem, and did not issue a free pass. Robert Girgis (4-4) gave up six runs (five earned) on 13 hits in six innings of work to take the loss for the visitors.

Flagler took a 2-1 lead on Moore's homer in the top of the fourth inning, but the Braves answered with three scores of their own in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good. UNCP would add a pair of insurance runs in each of the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to provide the final.

The Braves will continue their weekend set with Flagler with a 3 p.m. contest on Saturday at Sammy Cox Field. The squads will close out the series with a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday.
