No. 24 Baseball Uses Last At-Bat To Thwart Flagler, Take Series

PEMBROKE – The 24th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team registered its 29th double-digit hit attack of the season and rallied back from a seventh-inning deficit with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to stun visiting Flagler, 5-3, and clinch its weekend series with the Saints.

The Braves (32-12, 13-12 PBC), who improved to 25-4 this season when tallying 10 or more hits in an outing, put the icing on their 13th series victory of the season as well. It was the fourth loss in the last five outings for Flagler (29-17, 15-11) fell to 2-12 all-time at Sammy Cox Field with Saturday's result.

Seth Hartings hit a pair of doubles, including a two-run job in the eighth, to highlight a 2-for-4 outing for the Braves, while Luke Jackson doubled in a run and scored once on the way to turning in a 3-for-4 hitting line. Jarratt Mobley (2-for-3, SAC) and Roberto Rivera (2-for-5, 2B) posted a pair of hits for the hosts as well.

Ethan Crout and Sean Lawlor both hit solo homers for the Saints, while Steven DiPuglia came away with a 2-for-4 day at the plate.

Gunner Deal (6-2) struck out three in 2-2/3 innings of hitless relief to pick up the victory for the hosts, despite a solid outing from starter Jordan Toney who surrendered just a pair of earned runs in 6-1/3 innings from the hill. Ethan Jones (5-2) registered just one out in relief for the Saints, and took the loss after allowing three earned runs on a trio of hits in the game-deciding eighth.

Lawlor got the scoring started with a solo blast in the fourth, but the Braves answered with two scores of their own in the bottom of the frame. Flagler knotted the game back up on Crout's solo job in the fifth, and then utilized a pair of costly fielding errors in the seventh to go up on top, 3-2.

Trey Jacobs (hit by pitch) and Jackson (double) both reached to lead off the eighth, and Hartings finished off the scoring opportunity five pitches later on a double to the gap in right field. Hartings would eventually score on a wild pitch moments later to cap the scoring.

The Braves will close out a four-game home stand on Sunday when they wrap up their weekend series against Flagler on Super Hero Day at Sammy Cox Field. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
