No. 24 Baseball Belts Five Home Runs To Finish Off Flagler

PEMBROKE – The 24th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team got two home runs apiece from Luke Jackson and Seth Hartings and rallied for five runs with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to finish off a weekend sweep of Flagler on the shoulders of a 14-9 win over the Saints on Sunday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.

It was the fifth-straight victory for the Braves (33-12, 14-12 PBC) who improved to 24-2 in Pembroke this season – the most home wins for the club since 2015. Flagler (29-18, 15-12) has now dropped 11 of the last 13 matchups in the series with the Black & Gold, including five of the last six at Sammy Cox Field.

Jackson (3-for-4) matched a career high with seven RBI on the day, while Hartings hit a pair of solo jobs to highlight a 4-for-5 day at the dish. Three other Braves registered multi-hit outings, including Trevor Clemons who singled in each of his first three trips to the plate to cap off a 3-for-5 hitting line.

Frankie Martello homered and drove in five runs on a 2-for-5 outing for the visitors, while Jimmy Peck doubled in a run to earmark a 2-for-5 plate performance.

Thomas DuRant (1-0) inherited a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the fourth and slammed the door on the rally on the way to picking up his first decision in the Black & Gold. The Chapin, S.C., native struck out one in 1-2/3 innings of relief to highlight his 10th relief appearance of the season. Starter Ryan Ashworth (4-6) surrendered eight earned runs on 11 hits in six innings of work to saddle the loss for the Saints.

Jackson's sac fly, coupled with the first of two four-baggers by Hartings, helped the Braves stake claim to a 9-5 advantage in the seventh, but Martello's 3-run homer with two outs in the eighth got the Saints back into it. The Braves would finish off the visitors in the bottom of the frame, however, utilizing a RBI single from Ethan Baucom, a two-run triple from Trey Jacobs and a two-run bomb from Jackson to stretch their advantage out to 14-8.

The Braves will close out the road portion of their 2018 schedule on Tuesday when they head to Salisbury to take on Catawba (27-21). First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Newman Park.
