No. 19 Baseball Powers Past Georgia Southwestern In Opener

PEMBROKELuke Jackson and Connor Grainger both hit 3-run home runs, and the 19th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team tacked up 14-straight runs to fuel a 16-7 victory over visiting Georgia Southwestern in the front half of a series-opening doubleheader on Saturday at Sammy Cox Field.

Grainger (3-for-5, 3B, HR, 3 RBI) and Ethan Baucom (3-for-4, 3 RBI) both cashed in on a trio of hits to pace a 17-hit attack for the Braves (34-12, 15-12 PBC) who got multi-hit outings from four other players in the win as well. Seth Hartings (2-for-5, RBI) homered for the hosts as well.

Jason Baita hit a pair of doubles and drove in two runs on a 2-for-5 outing for Georgia Southwestern (10-33, 5-23), while Jared Jones singled three times and scored once on a 3-for-4 hitting line.

Anthony Burke (8-2) struck out two and surrendered just one earned run in eight innings from the hill to run his record to a perfect 4-0 in the month of April. Mitch Holloway (2-10) allowed nine runs (eight earned) on as many hits in just 5-2/3 innings of work to take the loss for the Hurricanes.

Georgia Southwestern lit up the scoreboard for two runs in the first, and re-upped its lead out to a pair of runs, 3-1, on Josh Logan's two-out RBI single in the second, but the walls came crashing down for the visitors after that. The Braves took the lead for good on Jackson's 3-run blast with one out in the third, and used a 6-run seventh inning to extend their advantage out to 15-3 heading to the eighth.
