No. 19 Baseball Squashes Rally, Clinches Series With Georgia Southwestern

PEMBROKE – The 19th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team scored nine runs in the first two innings, and quelled a late rally by the Hurricanes by plating a trio of runs in the eighth, as the Braves clinched their weekend series with Georgia Southwestern on a 13-7 victory over the Hurricanes on Saturday evening at Sammy Cox Field.

It was the seventh-straight victory for the Braves (35-12, 16-12 PBC) who have captured 17 of their last 21 outings dating back to March 27. The Hurricanes (10-34, 5-24) have now dropped five of their last seven contests, including five of their last six inside league play.

Trey Jacobs doubled three times and drove in four runs to highlight a 4-for-5 day at the plate that also helped him match a 19-year-old school record for doubles in a single season (24). Four other players turned in multiple hits for the hosts, including Luke Jackson who doubled twice and drove in three runs on a 2-for-4 day at the plate.

Jared Jones singled four times on five trips to the plate for Georgia Southwestern, while Jason Baita hit a 2-run homer and scored twice on a 3-for-5 hitting line.

Aaron Biggerstaff (4-1) scattered three hits across 2-1/3 scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win for the Black & Gold, while Gunner Deal struck out four and allowed just one hit in the eighth and ninth innings to tack up his fourth save of the season. Starter Kyle Britt (3-5) allowed seven earned runs on six hits in just one inning of work to saddle the loss for the visitors.

UNCP pounded out eight hits and scored nine times in the first two innings to set the tone early, but the Hurricanes rallied for five runs in the fourth to put a serious dent in their deficit before closing to within a trio of runs, 10-7, after Baita's 2-run blast in the fifth.

UNCP went hitless in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings, but added three insurance runs in the eighth thanks to RBI knocks from Jacobs, Jackson and Seth Hartings.

Biggerstaff spelled UNCP starter Jordan Toney with one out in the fifth and quieted down the visitor bats through the seventh. Deal faced just four batters in the eighth and five in the ninth to seal the outcome.

The Braves will close out their weekend series with Georgia Southwestern with a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday. The series finale will be preceded by Senior Day ceremonies as the Braves honor their four-member senior class –
Biggerstaff, Anthony Burke, Dale Masterson and Roberto Rivera.
