No. 19 Baseball Completes Sweep Of Georgia Southwestern

PEMBROKE – Redshirt freshman Trey Jacobs hit his school-record breaking 25th double of the season to highlight a 2-for-5 day at the plate and the 19th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team finished off a weekend sweep of Georgia Southwestern with an 11-2 win over the Hurricanes on Sunday at Sammy Cox Field.

It was the eighth-straight victory for the Braves (36-12, 17-12 PBC) who snapped the lid on a 27-2 campaign at home with the result as well – the second-most home victories in program history. It was the eighth-straight series road loss for the Hurricanes (10-35, 5-25) who are just 5-24 all-time against the Black & Gold.

Jacobs capped his day at the plate with a solo homer in the eighth to lead a quintet of Braves with multi-hit days at the plate. Elijah Helton drove in three runs on a 2-for-4 outing, while Ethan Baucom (2-for-5, 2B) and Connor Grainger (2-for-4, 2B) both drove in a pair of runs on 2-hit outings as well.

Jamison Wilks hit a pair of doubles on a 2-for-4 day for the visitors, while Jared Jones capped off an impressive weekend at the plate with a 2-for-3 outing.

Freshman southpaw Landen Smith (3-1) struck out five and scattered six hits across five quality innings from the hill to pick up the win for the Braves. Starter Kyle Spinks (2-7) surrendered six earned runs on seven hits and five walks in just 3-2/3 innings to take the loss for Georgia Southwestern.

The Hurricanes lit up the scoreboard first on Jonathan Martin's RBI single in the top of the first, but the Braves countered with two scores in each of the first, second and fourth innings before blowing the game wide open with five runs in the bottom of the eighth.

UNCP will take an 11-day hiatus from action before beginning its road in the postseason, May 11-13, at the Flagler-hosted Peach Belt Conference Tournament in St. Augustine, Fla. A complete schedule for the league's postseason gala will be announced next weekend.
