Jacobs Powers No. 17 Baseball Past North Georgia In PBC Tournament Opener

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.Trey Jacobs doubled, homered and drove in four runs to help support senior Anthony Burke's sixth complete-game outing of the season as the 17th-ranked and fourth-seeded UNC Pembroke baseball team outlasted fifth-seeded North Georgia, 6-4, on Friday in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament opener for both teams.

It was the ninth-straight victory for the Braves (37-12) who have not tasted defeat since an extra-inning loss at North Georgia on April 14. The Nighthawks (30-21) have now dropped five of their last seven outings, and have now dropped both PBC Tournament matchups with the Black & Gold, including last season's 8-5 setback in Florence, S.C.

Freshmen breakouts were the stories of the day for the UNCP offense who got 3-hit outings from both Jacobs (3-for-4) and Trevor Clemons (3-for-3, BB), with four other Braves turning in lone base hits. Jarratt Mobley (1-for-3) doubled in a run and scored a run in the victory as well.

Chase Sudduth tripled and scored twice on a 2-for-3 day for North Georgia, who also got a home run and three RBI from Andres Perez (1-for-3).

Burke (9-2) struck out three and scattered seven hits and four earned runs across his fourth complete game in the last 35 days (five appearances), while also picking up his fifth-straight win as well. All-conference standout Cade Heil (6-8) took the loss for the Nighthawks after allowing five runs on seven hits in just 3-2/3 innings of work.

Clemons hit a one-out single in the first and used an ill-timed error to get into position for Jacobs who laced a single off the glove of shortstop William Mapes to give the Braves the lead for good. Jacobs crushed a 2-run homer over the wall in centerfield to extend UNCP's lead out to a trio of runs in the bottom of the third.

Perez's one-out sac fly got North Georgia on the board in the fourth, but the Braves answered with a pair of scores in the bottom of the frame to put the game out of reach.

UNCP will close out pool play at the PBC Tournament with a pair of games on Saturday at St. Johns River Junior College's Tindall Field in nearby Palatka, Fla. The Braves will lock horns with eighth-seeded Lander (16-33) at 1:30 p.m., before battling top-seeded and sixth-ranked Georgia College (40-10) at 8:30 p.m.
