No. 17 Baseball Uses Smith, Five Long Balls To Rout Lander

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The fourth-seeded and 17th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team used five home runs and a phenomenal pitching performance from freshman southpaw Landen Smith to post a 12-2 rout of eighth-seeded Lander on Saturday at the Peach Belt Conference Tournament.

The result helped the Braves (38-12) push their win streak out to double digits, while also giving the Black & Gold control of their own destiny heading into Saturday evening's marquee matchup with top-seeded and sixth-ranked Georgia College. The setback snapped the lid on the 2018 campaign for Lander (16-35) who dropped all three of its games at the PBC Tournament.

Ethan Baucom homered twice, drove in four runs and scored three times to fuel a 4-for-5 hitting line for the Braves, while Elijah Helton doubled, homered and plated a trio of runs on a 3-for-4 outing. Trey Jacobs (2-for-4, 4 RBI) and Connor Grainger (1-for-4, 2 R) also hit long balls for UNCP.

Mike Fitschen (3-for-5) turned in three hits to pace Lander, while Brice Kirven hit a solo homer to highlight a 2-for-4 day at the dish.

Smith (4-1) struck out two and pitched six shutout innings before giving up a pair of earned runs in the seventh on the way to picking up his second win of the season against Lander. Starter Joseph Whitt (1-4) allowed seven runs (five earned) and eight hits in just 3-2/3 innings of work to saddle for loss for the Bearcats.

Baucom hit a 3-run homer in the first to help UNCP light up the scoreboard first, but the Braves added a 3-run blast from Jacobs in the third, as well as a RBI single from Jacobs in the fourth, to pad their lead out to 7-0. The Bearcats pushed a pair of runs across the plate in the seventh to spoil the shutout, but UNCP homered three times in the last two innings to tack up a quartet of insurance runs.

The Braves will close out pool play against the sixth-ranked Bobcats (40-10) on Saturday evening in Palatka, Fla. That game will begin approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of the extra-innings contest between Georgia College and fifth-seeded North Georgia.
