Anderson, Coker Too Much For Volleyball At FMU/Coker Invitational

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Freshman Shannon Skryd totaled 13 kills, 17 digs and three block assists to go along with two assists and a service ace, but the UNC Pembroke volleyball team came up empty on the second and final day of the FMU/Coker Invitational. Anderson knocked off the Braves in straight sets before host Coker needed four sets to topple the Black & Gold.

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST SET
-Raven Oates picked up a kill before an Anderson attack error gave the Braves a 2-0 lead and Skryd's first kill of the day put UNCP up 6-5 on the Trojans.
-Anderson scored the next four points to force a UNCP timeout and the Trojans rattled off an 8-0 run to stretch their lead to 19-9 en route to a set-one victory.

SECOND SET
-The Trojans opened the set with four-straight points and maintained that edge at 11-7 after a Brianna Warren kill for the Braves.
-The four-point advantage quickly swelled to 12 when Anderson went on another 8-0 run to lead 19-7 and coasted to the 25-11 triumph.

THIRD SET
-UNCP flipped a 7-4 deficit into an 8-7 lead four-consecutive points, including a pair of kills from Warren, and led 11-9 after a kill from Oates.
-Three-straight Trojan points gave Anderson a one-point edge and it pulled away with a 5-0 run that stretched a 19-17 lead into a 24-17 advantage.

NOTABLES
-Anderson hit over .340 in each of the three sets and compiled a .383 attack percentage in the match, while the Black & Gold hit .084 with 18 fewer kills than the Trojans.
-Skryd led all Braves with seven kills and the freshman tacked on nine digs, an assist, a service ace and a block assist.
-Oates and Warren added five and four kills, respectively, while Abby Farr chipped in six digs and an assist.
-Senior Bailee Jones dished out a team-high 20 assists, the 14th time in her career she has logged at least 20 assists and 41st instance of double-digit handouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST SET
-The Braves outhit Coker .250 to .146 in the first set and logged a match high 14 kills in the opening stanza.
-Coker led 8-6 after a 5-0 run, but UNCP retook the lead 10-9 on an Amber Tyndall kill.
-With the set knotted at 13-13, the Black & Gold used a pair of kills and a service ace to grab a 16-13 that it never surrendered.
-UNCP closed out the set with three-straight points thanks to a trio of errors from the Cobras.

SECOND SET
-A back-and-forth set saw neither team lead by more than four points and eight separate ties.
-After Coker built a 13-9 edge, the Braves used a 7-2 run to grab a 16-15 lead, which was their first advantage since 2-1.
-The Cobras took another four-point edge at 23-19, but UNCP answered with a 4-0 run, including two service aces from Bailee Jones, to tie the set at 23-23.
-Two Black & Gold attack errors handed Coker the 25-23, set-two victory, and knotted the match at one set apiece. 

THIRD SET
-Coker jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the critical third set and led 8-2 before the Braves called their first timeout of the set.
-The Cobras used a 9-0 run to take a commanding 17-5 advantage, but UNCP battled back with an 11-2 run to pull back within three at 21-18.
-The hosts maintained the three-point edge at 23-20 before an attack error and kill put an end to the set at 25-20.

FOURTH SET
-With the Braves ahead 5-3 after a Skryd kill, Coker rattled off six-straight points to take a 9-5 lead.
-Three-straight UNCP kills brought the Black & Gold back to within one at 10-9 and another three-kill stretch pulled the Braves even at 13-13.
-Coker closed the set with a 12-2 run to claim the 25-15 victory.

NOTABLES
-The Cobras outhit UNCP in each of the final three sets and held a .223-.138 edge in the match.
-Tyndall and Aquia Jones each logged nine kills in the defeat, while Oates and Warren chipped in seven kills each.
-Oates tacked on 19 digs and Skryd racked up six kills and eight digs.
-Anna Heinz tallied a team-best 24 digs, while Bailee Jones added 13 digs and 22 assists for her 10th-career double double.
-Coker's Taylor du Bray had a match-high 28 kills on 61 attacks and tacked on 15 digs and three service aces.

UP NEXT
The Braves will enjoy a week off before opening up the 2018 home slate Friday on the first day of the UNCP Invitational at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. The two-day tournament will see five other teams trek to Pembroke for the 12-match invitational. The Black & Gold play Friday at 9 a.m. against Shaw (0-4) before taking on Lenoir-Rhyne (0-0) at 7 p.m in the day's final match.
