Turnovers Key As Women’s Basketball Falls To PBC-Leading Lander

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team limited Peach Belt Conference-leading Lander to just 39 percent shooting, but the Bearcats scored 37 points off of 29 turnovers by the hosts to fuel an 84-49 win on Tuesday at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
 
It was the fifth loss in the last six outings for the Braves (3-8, 2-3 PBC) who fell to 2-3 at home this season with the setback as well. The triumph marked the fifth-consecutive win for the Bearcats (9-4, 6-1) who have now won three-straight road games as well.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Brianna Baham's basket with 3:57 remaining gave the Braves a 10-8 advantage over Lander. The Bearcats answered with an 11-0 run before Alecia Hardy drained two free throws to cut the deficit back to 19-12 at the 1:22 mark.
2ND QUARTER
The Black & Gold got to within two points, 27-25, after Brianna Baham's trey with 5:17 remaining in the half. Lander responded just less than a minute later with a 3-pointer by Miriam Recarte to extend their lead out to 30-25. The Braves cut the deficit to one on two free throws from Melanie Horne with three minutes remaining in the half, but Lander scored the last five points of the period to take a 35-29 advantage into intermission.
3RD QUARTER
Aliyah Farmer's layup 30 seconds into the quarter helped the Braves inch closer to the Bearcats, 35-31. Lander took advantage of nearly a five-minute scoring drought by the Black & Gold and extended its lead out to 46-31. Tee Graham snapped the cold-shooting spell on a jumper with 4:54 remaining. Lander outscored the Braves 12-6 to head into the final quarter with a 58-39 advantage.
4TH QUARTER
Aliyah Farmer's layup with 6:38 left to play was the first basket of the quarter for UNC Pembroke who trailed 63-41. Lander scored 26 of the final 34 points to cap the scoring on the night.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Alecia Hardy led the Black & Gold with a team-high 10 points.
+ Se'Dasia Love and Melanie Horne both pulled down a game-high six rebounds apiece. Love also added a game-high four blocks.
+ Avery Locklear tallied four steals on the night.
NOTABLES
+ Lander scored 37 points off of UNC Pembroke's 29 turnovers, while the Braves were only able to score 9 points off Lander's 10 turnovers.
+ The Black & Gold got 28 points from its bench, including nine points from both Brianna Baham and Aliyah Farmer.
UP NEXT
The Braves open a two-game road trip when they travel to Georgia College (5-6, 3-2 PBC) on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. inside the Centennial Center.
