Volleyball Closes Out Long Road Stretch With Loss At Coker

October 1, 2019

Box Score HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke volleyball team put together a 12-1 run to even things up with a convincing victory in the second set, but home-standing Coker rebounded with wins in each of the next two sets on the way to a 3-1 triumph over the Braves on Tuesday evening at the DeLoach Center.

The setback closed out a 12-match stretch away from home for the Braves (8-10) who will carry a three-match skid into a pair of weekend matches at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. The victory snapped a six-match losing streak for the Cobras (4-7) who have now won six-straight matchups in the series with the Black & Gold.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 22-25 The Cobras captured seven of the opening set's first nine points, but UNCP put together a 6-1 run to knot things up at eight apiece. Coker tacked up eight-straight points to swing all of the momentum to their side on the way to an 18-12 advantage, but the visitors chipped away at their deficit and eventually pulled to within one, 19-18, thanks to an attack error by the hosts. The Cobras won four of the last six points to close out the set.
SET 2 I 25-18 The squads split the first four points of the second set, but a kill from Shannon Skryd moments later gave the lead to the Braves for good. UNCP put together a 12-1 run and eventually built an 18-6 lead following a kill from Raven Oates, and led by as much as a baker's dozen, 22-9, after an attack error from the Cobras. Coker put up nine of the set's final 12 points, but an attack error on the fourth set point handed the set to the Braves.
SET 3 I 16-25 Coker scored the first five points of the third set and led 8-1 after a kill from Taylor du Bray. The Cobras pushed their lead out to double digits, 18-8, on Chelsey Blume's kill, and used an attack error from the Braves to set up set point with a 24-10 advantage. The Braves did not go down without a fight, however, and reeled off six-straight points before a block helped the hosts pocket the set.
SET 3 I 17-25 The Cobras tacked up eight of the set's first nine points to build an early lead, but UNCP eventually climbed back to within four points, 11-7, after a service ace from Raven Oates. That difference stayed, more or less, the same for much of the rest of the set, before the Cobras closed out the night with four-straight points.
