No. 4 Flagler Scores Overtime Goal To Slip Past Soccer

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke soccer team netted the first goal of the contest, but No. 4 Flagler utilized a 70th-minute penalty kick to even the game back up, and then netted the Golden Goal nine minutes into overtime to give the visitors a 2-1 victory on Saturday afternoon at Lumbee River EMC Stadium.
 
The setback snapped a 21-game home unbeaten streak for the Braves (7-3-0, 3-2-0 PBC) who had not lost a game on its home turf since the start of the 2017 season. The nationally-ranked Saints (10-0-0, 5-0-0) stretched their unbeaten streak in the series with UNCP out to five games, and have not lost to the Braves since the 2014 campaign.


 
SCORING SUMMARY
45' UNCP earned a free kick and Nona Borden's perfectly-placed pass found the head of Katy Ryan who redirected the ball into the back of the net.
70' Lorena Lopez evened the score up at one apiece after the Saints earned a penalty kick with less than 20 minutes left in regulation.
99' Flagler took advantage of a free kick opportunity and Maria Mujica-Castorino scored the game-winning goal.
 
TOP BRAVES
+ Senior Katy Ryan netted her career-best third goal of the season.
+ Freshman Nona Borden picked up the first point of her rookie season with the assist on Katy Ryan's first-half goal.
+ Newcomer Paula Valbuena registered a team-best seven shots in the contest.  
 
NOTABLES
+ Saturday's setback stopped a 21-game home unbeaten streak (18-game win streak) for the Braves who had not lost at Lumbee River EMC Stadium since a 1-0 setback to Limestone on Sept. 3, 2017.
+ UNCP outshot the Saints 24-16 on the afternoon, including a 12-7 advantage in the second half.
+ The Braves have captured just one win against the Saints in Pembroke, and are 1-3-2 all-time against the Saints at Lumbee River EMC Stadium. UNCP posted a 2-1 home victory over Flagler on Oct. 5, 2013.
 
 
UP NEXT
The Braves step back out of Peach Belt Conference play on Tuesday when they travel to Tigerville, S.C., to take on North Greenville (7-2-0). Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Pepsi Stadium.
