Football Rallies, But Falls Short At No. 13 Wingate

WINGATE – The UNC Pembroke football team racked up two specials teams touchdowns and scored 35 points in the second half alone, but 13th-ranked and undefeated Wingate totaled nearly 500 yards of offense and made a sizeable halftime lead stand up in a 48-38 victory over the Braves on Saturday afternoon.

The setback was the 12th-straight road loss for the Braves (3-4), including a trio of losses away from Pembroke this season. It was the sixth-straight home win for the nationally-ranked Bulldogs (7-0) who registered 17 plays on the day that went for at least 10 yards.

THE BASICS

RECORDS: UNC Pembroke (3-4); #13 Wingate (7-0)
LOCATION: Wingate, N.C. (Irwin Belk Stadium)
HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
The Bulldogs needed very little time to put points on the board with their opening possession of the contest, driving 80 yards in five plays in just less than two minutes. Shaw Crocker's 52-yard pass to Jalen Brooks on second down keyed the drive, as did a 19-yard run by Nijere Peoples. Wingate 7, UNCP 0

A blocked punt near midfield set the hosts up in good field position, and they needed just one play to take advantage of it. Shaw Crocker found B.J. Muckelvene on a 55-yard scoring strike that put the Bulldogs up by two scores. Wingate 14, UNCP 0

Wingate nearly became the first team this season to stuff the Braves on a red zone opportunity, but a big pass interference penalty by the Bulldogs kept the possession alive. The 13-play, 53-yard drive by the Black & Gold was eventually capped on a 32-yard field goal from Hunter Braswell. Wingate 14, UNCP 3
2ND QUARTER
Wingate bridged the first and second quarters with 6-play, 53-yard drive that padded its lead out to three scores. Backup quarterback Darquez Lee went 2-for-2 for 51 yards on the possession, including a 38-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Brooks. Wingate 21, UNCP 3

The Bulldogs forced a big 3-and-out and eventually set themselves up in good field position near midfield on the way to extending their lead. Shaw Crocker completed all three of his pass attempts for 49 yards, including a 21-yard touchdown pass to B.J. Muckelvene that capped the drive. Wingate 28, UNCP 3
3RD QUARTER
The Bulldogs marched 63 yards on six plays on the first possession for either team in the second half, and extended their lead out to 32 points with a 6-yard scoring plunge by Nijere Peoples. Peoples was the feature player in the last four plays of the drive, carrying the ball four times for 49 yards. Wingate 35, UNCP 3

UNCP came to life on the ensuing possession with an 8-play, 75-yard scoring drive that milked just more than three minutes off of the clock. Josh Jones went 4-for-5 for 51 yards on the possession, and Josh Sheridan carried the ball four times for 24 yards, including a 6-yard touchdown run. Wingate 35, UNCP 10

Wingate needed just two plays on the following drive to push its lead back out to 32 points. Darquez Lee found Ryder Martin on a 36-yard strike on the first play of the drive, and Dom McNeill's 30-yard touchdown run on the ensuing play capped the short scoring drive. Wingate 42, UNCP 10

The Braves hit back seconds later when Devin Jones hauled in the ensuing kickoff one yard into the end zone, juked a few potential tacklees and eventually tacked up a 100-yard kickoff return for touchdown. Wingate 42, UNCP 17

Code Black held the hosts to just four plays on the ensuing possession and eventually gave the ball back to the offense at their own 27-yard line. Josh Jones went 4-for-5 for 29 yards on the drive, McKinley Nelson ran twice for 24 yards and DeAngelo Blair-Young punched it in from one yard away to cap the touchdown drive. The extra point was blocked and returned by Wingate for two points, but an inadvertent whistle stripped the extra points off of the scoreboard. Wingate 42, UNCP 23
4TH QUARTER
Juan Pagan-Gonzalez stepped in front of a pass by Josh Jones at the UNCP 25-yard line to set up the first score of the fourth quarter. Darquez Lee found Mason Flynt on a 22-yard touchdown pass on the very next play to cap the touchdown drive, but the Braves blocked the extra point to keep their deficit at 25 points. Wingate 48, UNCP 23

Code Black forced a 3-and-out deep in Wingate territory, and Sam Vines swatted a punt attempt from Ethan Evans into the end zone. Eric Price scooped up the loose ball to put some more points up on the board for the Braves. Wingate 48, UNCP 30

Following another 3-and-out by the hosts, UNCP took possession at their own 27-yard line late in the fourth quarter and eventually put the final points of the day on the board. Josh Jones threw for 55 yards on 7-of-8 passing, including a 12-yard touchdown strike across the middle to Marcus McDonald. Jones found Sean Brown in the back of the end zone on the 2-point conversion to cap the scoring on the day. Wingate 48, UNCP 38
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Sophomore Josh Jones threw for 173 yards and one score on 22-of-46 passing with an interception. He also ran for 20 yards on nine carries.
+ Redshirt sophomore Tyshawn Carter hauled in a team-best seven catches for 59 yards. Marcus McDonald (3 catches, 17 yards) accounted for the day's only scoring reception for UNCP, however.
+ Senior Josh Sheridan ran 12 times for 58 yards and a third quarter touchdown, while also tallying two receptions for 16 yards. It is the sixth time this season that the Lumberton native has had at least 10 rushing attempts, and the fourth time in the last five games he has registered multiple pass receptions.
+ Redshirt junior Isaac Parks averaged 45.7 yards on seven punts against the Bulldogs, including a pair of 50+-yard boots. He also pinned the Bulldogs inside their own 20-yard line on two occasions.
+ Redshirt junior Jordan Howard led Code Black with eight tackles, including a trio of solo stops. Luke Brooks (5 tackles) tallied the only tackle for loss on the day for the Braves.
NOTABLES
+ The Braves have now lost four-straight games in the series with the Bulldogs, including three-straight matchups at Irwin Belk Stadium. The 38 points matches the second-most points ever scored by the Braves in the series, and the most in a loss to Wingate.
+ UNCP (303) crossed the 300-total offensive yards for the fifth time this season, but rushed for at least 100 yards (130) for the first time since tacking up 116 yards in a loss to Limestone on September 28.
+ Devin Jones's career-long 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the third quarter was the third career kickoff return for touchdown for the redshirt junior. He also returned a kickoff 87 yards for a score earlier this season against Virginia State. It is the eighth time in program history that UNCP has returned a kickoff for a touchdown.
+ Saturday's game marked the first time that the Braves have gotten multiple touchdowns (kickoff return TD, blocked punt TD) from their special teams since that unit found the end zone twice against Kentucky Wesleyan on Oct. 15, 2016. Tra Chandler returned a kick 93 yards for a score in that outing, and Rick Mack picked up a blocked punt and scurried 13 yards for a touchdown.
+ UNCP scored on all four trips inside the red zone on Saturday, and improved to 23-for-23 (18 TD, 5 FG) on red zone opportunities this season. The Braves are the only team in NCAA Division II that has scored on every red zone opportunity in 2019.
UP NEXT
The Braves will continue a four-game road trip next Saturday (October 26) when they make the five-hour trek to Greeneville, Tenn., to take on Tusculum (2-5). Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
