Lander Uses Late Rallies To Sweep Volleyball

GREENWOOD, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke volleyball team matched a season-high with 12 blocks and registered just a handful of errors at the net, but Peach Belt Conference-leading Lander put together late rallies in all three sets on the way to a 3-0 victory over the Braves on Friday evening in Horne Arena.

The outing was the fifth leg of a six-match road swing for the Braves (13-16, 1-6 PBC) who will travel to take on PBC co-leading USC Aiken on Saturday. It was the fourth-straight win for the Bearcats (17-6, 6-1) who have now taken 16-straight series matchups as well.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 20-25 The Braves committed just one attack error in the opening set, but the Bearcats hit nearly .250 at the net and scored six of the last seven points to take early control of the night. The Braves led by two points, 18-16, following a kill from April Tankersley, but the Bearcats tacked up three-straight points to go out in front. Ashley Caesar's kill moments later knotted things back up, but the hosts raked in six of the last seven points to take the set.
SET 2 I 19-25 Block assists from Brianna Warren and April Tankersley knotted the second set up at 14 points apiece, but put up five of the next six points to take the lead for good. The Braves pulled to within three points, 22-19, on another kill from Ashley Caesar, but Lander used a kill and two ill-timed errors by the Black & Gold to close out the second set.
SET 3 I 22-25 Neither side was able to find a consistent hitting attack in the third set, but the Bearcats used another late run to close out the night. The Braves forged a 17-16 lead on a kill from Brianna Warren, but Lander answered with three-straight points to regain the advantage. A kill from Elly Hicks knotted the set up at 20 points apiece, but the Bearcats closed out the match with a 5-2 run to clinch the victory.
