Football Falls To Newberry In Overtime

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke football team amassed nearly 38 minutes of possession time and racked up 337 yards of offense, but home-standing Newberry totaled five sacks and benefited from a missed extra point late in the fourth quarter on the way to a 37-34 overtime victory over the Braves on Saturday.

The setback kept UNCP (3-6) winless in five road outings this season, as well as kept the Braves empty-handed on the last three trips to Setzler Field. It was the third win in the last five outings for Newberry (4-5) who improved to 3-2 at home in 2019.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Newberry 37, UNC Pembroke 34 (OT)
RECORDS: UNC Pembroke (3-6); Newberry (4-5)
LOCATION: Newberry, S.C. (Setzler Field)
HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
The Wolves used a miscue by the Braves to set up the first points of the game as Devin Jones coughed up the ball on a punt return early in the opening period. That set the hosts up at the 32-yard line and Dre Harris found Deshun Kitchings on a 32-yard scoring strike moments later. Newberry 7, UNCP 0

The Newberry defense forced a quick 3-and-out by the Braves to get the ball back in good field position. Chance Walker took care of the rest when the junior raced around tackle and scurried 60 yards to give the hosts a two-touchdown advantage. Newberry 14, UNCP 0

The Braves answered on the ensuing possession when Josh Jones and Deangelo Blair-Young engineered an 11-play, 49-yard scoring drive that was capped on a 22-yard field goal from Hunter Braswell. Blair-Young carried the ball eight times for 39 yards to fuel the possession. Newberry 14, UNCP 3
2ND QUARTER
The Wolves went out in front by three scores with an impressive 4-play, 76-yard touchdown drive midway through the second quarter. Deshun Kitchings did most of the work with a 25-yard reception on second down, as well as a 39-yard touchdown run up the middle to cap the possession. Newberry 21, UNCP 3

The Braves had an answer moments later as Devin Jones hauled in a kickoff at the 5-yard line and scampered 95 yards for the quick score. Newberry 21, UNCP 10

Newberry countered with special teams magic of their own moments later when Chance Walker turned in a 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. It was the game's third score in 31 seconds. Newberry 28, UNCP 10

UNCP had an answer again on the ensuing possession thanks to the wonders of a 13-play, 65-yard scoring drive. Josh Sheridan ran for 36 yards on six carries on the drive, and then capped it off with a 4-yard touchdown reception. Newberry 28, UNCP 17

Newberry coughed up the ball near midfield on the next play from scrimmage, and the Braves made it a one-score game heading into the break. Josh Jones completed all three of his pass attempts for 47 yards on the possession, and punched it in from one yard out to close it out as well. Jones also found Faheem Diaab on the ensuing 2-point conversion try. Newberry 28, UNCP 25
3RD QUARTER
Newberry had its chances to take it back to a two-score game midway through the third period, but Code Black held tough in the red zone to stay within striking distance. The Wolves had a 1st-and-10 opportunity at UNCP's 17-yard line, but ultimately had to settle for a 29-yard field goal from Shea Rogers. Newberry 31, UNCP 25
4TH QUARTER
The Braves put together another impressive drive that milked nearly 5-1/2 minutes off of the fourth-quarter clock. Josh Jones completed five of his six pass attempts on the drive, including a 25-yard touchdown pass to McKinley Nelson. UNCP had the chance to take its first lead of the game, but the ensuing extra point attempt sailed wide right. Newberry 31, UNCP 31
OVERTIME
The Braves drove inside the Newberry 10-yard line on just three plays, but could not get any closer to the end zone. A 3rd down pass attempt from Josh Jones to Marcus McDonald was batted away at the goal line. Hunter Braswell's 25-yard field goal, however, gave the Braves their first lead of the afternoon. UNCP 34, Newberry 31

The Wolves gained 10 yards on their first two plays of the overtime period, and backup quarterback Greg Ruff found Bryson Woodruff on a 15-yard touchdown strike moments later to clinch the outcome. Newberry 37, UNCP 34
