Volleyball Falls To Augusta In PBC Quarterfinals

AIKEN, S.C. – Third-seeded Augusta used a late run to pick up a key victory in the opening set, and then held off a handful of rally attempts by the sixth-seeded UNC Pembroke volleyball team in the fourth set, to fuel a 3-1 victory over the Braves in the quarterfinal round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament on Friday evening.
 
UNCP (15-21) closes out its 2019 campaign with 15 victories, the most for the program since the 2013 club turned in 16 wins. Augusta (25-8) advances through to Saturday's PBC Tournament semifinal round where they will face second-seeded and tournament host USC Aiken.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 21-25 The squads split the first 24 points of the opening set before Augusta strung together three-straight points to take the lead for good. The Braves battled back from a four-point deficit and pulled to within one, 22-21, on a kill from Elly Hicks, but the Jaguars closed it out with three consecutive kills.
SET 2 I 25-21 The Braves grabbed an 8-3 lead thanks to a solo block from Brianna Warren, but the Jaguars responded with six-straight points to storm ahead. UNCP responded with four consecutive points of their own to retake the lead, and broke a 17-17 tie later in the set with another run as well that put them out in front the rest of the way out.
SET 3 I 11-25 Selena Biele's kill gave UNCP an early 5-4 advantage, but Augusta strung together four-straight points after that to take the lead for good. The Jaguars used a 4-0 run to stretch their lead out to 14-7, and then used five-straight points later in the set to pad their advantage out to 20-9.
SET 4 I 22-25 UNCP tacked up three-straight points to grab a late 19-18 lead, but Augusta countered with a 3-0 run and never looked back after that. The Braves pulled to within one point, 22-21, on an attack error by the Jaguars, but Augusta scored three of the final four points to close out the match.
