Softball Drops Two At Queens

CHARLOTTE – Queens fought off a bases-loaded threat by the UNC Pembroke softball team in the seventh inning, and then pushed across a run in the ninth to key a doubleheader sweep of the Braves on Thursday at Park Road Park. The Black & Gold could not get anything going in game two as the Royals prevailed, 8-0, in six innings.
 
The setback marked the second straight series sweep on the road for the Braves (6-6), but the first extra-inning game for UNCP in the 2019 season. It was the fourth straight win for the Royals (5-1), who will play Augusta on Thursday.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
TOP 5 Alyssa Price put the Braves on the board with a solo home run over the left field fence to give the Black & Gold a 1-0 lead.
BOT 5 Pinch hitter Chloe Linton drew a one-out walk before being knocked home off of a Gerlea Patton triple to right center field to knot the score at 1-1.
TOP 7 Mary Sells and Tatum Brummitt both drew walks to load the bases with two outs. Cameron Davis popped out to the shortstop to end the Braves chances of regaining the lead.
BOT 9 With the International tiebreaker rule in effect, Kelly Winter was placed on second to start the inning and advanced 60 feet on Jordan Hunt's single with one out. McKenzie McCullen smacked the walk-off single to second to score Winter.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 4 Tatum Brummitt and Jordan Adcox both reached via error to put runners on the corners for the Black & Gold, and UNCP loaded the bases with two outs when Alex Watkins drew a hit by pitch. The Royals escaped the jam, however, when Courtney Pearson got Cara Davis on a swinging strikeout.
BOT 4 McKenzie McCullen put Queens on the board first with a solo home run to left field. The hosts had opportunities to pad their lead, but stranded two runners on the paths.
BOT 5 Gerlea Patton started the inning with a home run over the centerfield fence, and Jordan Hunt hit a 2-run homer two batters later to extend lead out to 3-0. McKenzie McCullen kept the momentum going with a single through the right side and later scored on single to right field from Sara Ingoldby.
BOT 6 Gerlea Patton and Kelly Winter hit consecutive singles to lead off the home half of the sixth. And McKenzie McCullen finished off the run-rule win with a 3-run homer to centerfield two batters later.
