Wingate Sweeps Doubleheader With Softball

PEMBROKE – Wingate plated the first run in both games and fought off a bases-loaded scare in game two by the UNC Pembroke softball team to complete a doubleheader sweep with 4-1 and 2-0 victories on Friday at the UNCP Softball Field.
 
The setback in game one snapped a five-game series win streak for the Braves (6-8) who had captured seven of the last eight matchups with the Bulldogs heading into the day.
 
The setback marked the first series sweep at home for the Braves (6-8), who have now dropped the last four contests. It was the 10th-straight win for the Bulldogs (10-2) who have not tasted defeat since getting swept in a season-opening doubleheader on February 2 at Erskine.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
TOP 1 Haley Cashwell drew a walk to open the day and made her way around to third base before scoring on a RBI single from Mary Claire Coyne.
TOP 2 The Bulldogs scored three times in the second to extend their lead out to 4-0. Haley Cashwell hit a RBI single to score the first run of the frame, and Mary Claire Coyne finished off the scoring on a two-run single up the middle.
BOT 2 Cara Davis hammered Rachel Weidner's first offering in the home half of the second over the fence in straightaway centerfield for what would turn out to be the only run of the game for the Black & Gold. 
BOT 5 Cara Davis and Alex Watkins led off the inning with consecutive singles, and then moved into scoring position on a sac bunt from Carleigh Brooks. Rachel Weidner got Alyssa Price on a first-pitch foul out, however, and then struck out Kaitlynn Norton to nix the threat.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 3 Sammi Jo Loney led off the frame with an infield single and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from Haley Cashwell. Mary Claire Coyne gave the Bulldogs the lead for good on a two-out RBI single two batters later.
TOP 7 Sammi Jo Loney singled to lead off the seventh, and moved up a base on an ill-timed wild pitch from reliever Tatum Brummitt. Mary Claire Coyne's two-out RBI double would eventually plate the insurance run for the visitors.
BOT 7 Jordan Adcox and Cameron Davis hit consecutive one-out singles, and Carleigh Brooks drew an 11-pitch walk to load the bases with two outs, but Aubrey Reep slammed the door on the rally by striking out Alyssa Price.

The Braves will have a week off before returning to the UNCP Softball Field on February 23 to face Belmont Abbey (6-2). First pitch of the twinbill is scheduled for 1 p.m. and admission to all 2019 UNCP Softball games is free.
