Softball Handles William Peace

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke softball team pounded out 15 hits, including two home runs, en route a doubleheader sweep of William Peace Tuesday evening at the UNCP Softball Field. The Braves won game one, 8-0 in six innings, before taking the nightcap, 6-3.
 
The triumph snapped a four-game losing streak for the Black & Gold (8-8) who had not game action in nearly two weeks.  The setback marked the first games of the season for the Pacers (0-2) who had their first seven games postponed or cancelled due to inclement weather.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
BOT 1 Rendi Wetherington reached on an error and advanced to third on a single from Mary Sells. A bunt from Alex Watkins scored Wetherington and advanced Sells, who eventually scored on a groundout by Cameron Davis.
BOT 6 Cameron Davis led off the frame with a solo homer that opened the flood gates for five runs to invoke the mercy rule. Tatum Brummitt, Cara Davis and Carleigh Brooks all reached safely in consecutive at-bats, and the hosts produced run-scoring knocks in three of their next four trips to the plate.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 1 Emily Puckett and Lauren Conway led off the game with singles, and both eventually moved into scoring position to set the table for a two-run single by Summer Jacobs that gave the visitors their first lead of the day.
BOT 1 Mary Sells and Tatum Brummitt both climbed aboard with one out, and the Braves took the lead for good on a 3-run blast from Cameron Davis. Lauren Hilbourn and Carleigh Brooks tallied run-scoring knocks in consecutive at-bats to push the lead out to 5-2.
TOP 5 Emily Puckett reached via a hit by pitch and moved to third on a single from Lauren Conway. Candice Smith's sacrifice fly to right field was enough to score Puckett from third.
BOT 5 Jordan Adcox reached on a four-pitch walks with two outs showing, stole second base and eventually scored on the heels of an error by the Pacers.

The Braves will be back in action at home on Saturday when they face Newberry (13-3) on Social Media Weekend. First pitch of the twinbill is scheduled for 1 p.m. and admission to all 2019 UNCP Softball games is free.
