Softball Starts A Rally, But Falls Twice To Newberry

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke softball team produced a big sixth inning in game 2, but were unable to string together enough hits to avoid a sweep by Newberry on Saturday evening at the UNCP Softball Field. The Braves dropped game one, 7-2, and lost the second game of the nightcap, 5-4.
 
The setbacks marked the fourth sweep of the season for the Braves (8-10) who swept a home twinbill with William Peace on Tuesday. The Wolves (15-3) have now captured three of their last four contests.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
TOP 1 Newberry loaded the bases with its first three at-bats of the frame, and then took the lead for good on a sac fly from Haley Simonds. The Wolves pushed their lead out to three runs later in the inning on the shoulders of a two-out single from Reagan Glanz that plated a pair of runs.
BOT 1 Tatum Brummitt hit a two-out double, and the Braves got on the board on a RBI double from Cameron Davis with the next at-bat. Jordan Adcox hit a RBI double moments later to plate Davis.
TOP 2 Haley Simonds tacked up a pair of insurance runs for the Wolves with a two-out double that brought home a pair of scores. 
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 1 A run-scoring triple by Natalie Willis got the scoring started for Newberry who added two more runs in the frame, including an unearned score following a costly error by the hosts.
TOP 2 Ashley Willis reached via error to lead off the inning, and was knocked in later in the frame on a one-out single by Natalie Willis. 
BOT 6 The Braves plated a trio of runs in the sixth and nearly rallied all the way back from a 5-1 deficit entering the frame. Mary Sells (hit) and Tatum Brummitt (walk) both reached safely to lead off the inning and set the table for a 3-run homer by Cameron Davis. Jordan Adcox drew an 11-pitch walk and moved all the way around to third with just one out showing, but a ground out and a strike out nixed the threat.

With heavy rain expected to move across the state of North Carolina, UNCP's doubleheader at Limestone has been postponed. A makeup date has not yet been set. The Black & Gold will be back in action again on March 12 at Coker. First pitch of that twinbill is scheduled for 2 p.m.
