Augusta Takes Series With No. 40 Baseball

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Patrick Watson's 2-run homer with two outs in the fourth highlighted a momentum-changing inning for Augusta as the Jaguars posted a series-clinching 5-3 victory over the 40th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team on Saturday afternoon.

It was the first series loss of the season for the Braves (6-3, 1-2 PBC) who will continue a seven-game road trip on Tuesday at Catawba. Augusta (5-5, 2-4) has now captured six of the last night matchups with the Braves at home.

KEY INNINGS
BOT 1 Skylor Murphy walked to lead off the home half of the first and later scored on Harrison Moore's single up the middle to give Augusta the early lead.
BOT 4 Zack Goble hit a one-out double and scored two batters later on Brian Smith's triple to the gap in right field. Patrick Watson followed with a 2-run homer to right field to give the hosts a 4-0 lead.
TOP 6 Ethan Baucom hit a one-out double to the gap in right field and, following a successful steal of third base, trotted home on catcher Beau Hanna's throwing error.
BOT 6 Zack Goble singled to lead off the frame, and Augusta eventually loaded the bases on an intentional walk that was issued to Patrick Watson. Wade Sumner's sacrifice fly to centerfield pushed the lead back out to three runs.
TOP 7 Newcomer Zach Ghelfi helped the Braves cut into their deficit with a solo homer to start the seventh. UNCP put a pair of runners into scoring position with two outs, but reliever John Micah Law induced an inning-ending groundout off of the bat of Ethan Baucom.
TOP 9 Zach Ghelfi (single) and Brennen Hogan (walk) both reached to lead off the ninth for the Braves, and later moved into scoring position with two outs on a groundout by Trevor Clemons. A fielding error allowed Ghelfi to cross for the Braves, but Law induced a game-ending flyout in the next at-bat.
