Softball Drops Both Ends Of Twinbill At Catawba

SAILSBURY – The UNC Pembroke softball team got on the board first in the opener of its doubleheader at Catawba on Saturday, but were unable to pick up a victory on the day, falling 7-4 in game one before being on the wrong end of a 9-0 run-rule contest on Saturday at Whitely Field.

Rendi Wetherington and Cameron Davis both hit home runs in the opener for the Braves (4-4), who also got a pair of doubles from Tatum Brummitt as well. Cara Davis logged a double in both ends of the doubleheader.

Jordan Hall (2-1) took the loss for the Black & Gold in the opener after allowing seven runs (five earned) on eight hits and five walks. She also struck out three. Malerie Leviner (2-2) saddled the loss in the nightcap after surrendering give earned runs on six hits in two innings from the circle.

Wetherington hit a solo homer in the first at-bat of the day to give UNCP a quick 1-0 lead, and Cameron Davis stretched the advantage out to 2-0 three batters later on a single to centerfield. Catawba tacked up runs in each of the next three innings, however, to go out in front 5-2. The Braves cut into their deficit with a pair of runs in the fifth, but the Indians pushed across three insurance runs in the sixth to provide the final.

Brooke Walser limited UNCP to just three hits in game two, while also striking out four. Catawba scored five times off a trio of RBI singles in the second, and then scored four times in the fourth, including a 2-run homer from Jordan Dean.

The Braves will return home on Sunday to face Elizabeth City State (0-0) at the UNCP Softball Field. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m. and admission to all 2019 UNCP Softball home games is free.
