Home Runs Help No. 3 North Georgia Complete PBC Sweep Over Softball

PEMBROKE – Third-ranked North Georgia pounded out 23 hits, including four home runs, to complete a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader sweep of the UNC Pembroke softball team Thursday on evening at the UNCP Softball Field. The Braves dropped game one, 8-4, and lost the second game of the nightcap, 10-0 in six innings.
 
The setbacks marked the first league matchups of the season for the Braves (8-14, 0-2 PBC) who saw their losing skid stretched out to six games. The Nighthawks (24-6, 2-0 PBC) have now captured their last six outings.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
TOP 2 Marley Stowers reached base safely via a bunt up the third base line, Shelby Hammontree hit a two-run dinger over the left field fence to put the Nighthawks on the board. 
TOP 3 Hobby Gregory drew a five-pitch walk and stole second to set the table for Kaylee Womack who sent another ball deep and over the left field fence to pad the lead out to 4-0. 
TOP 6 Katie Collins ripped a single through the infield to climb aboard, and pinch runner Kelly Kahlert scored on an inside-the-park home run to the gap in right field from Marley Stowers. Shelby Hammontree followed with a single through the infield and scored on a RBI single from Kali Turner. 
BOT 6 Rendi Wetherington reached on a single to right field and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Back-to-back errors from North Georgia both plated a run and left a pair of Braves in scoring position. Two more singles pushed across two more runs, and a sac fly from Cara Davis capped off a four-run frame. 
TOP 7 Katie Collins singled to start the inning, but it was two errors by the hosts in the frame that eventually led to the game's final run. 
BOT 7 Mary Sells reached base via a hit by pitch, and advanced two bases when Jessica Auld ripped a double into left field. The Braves loaded the bases with two outs when Jordan Adcox wore a pitch, but were unable to come away with any runs. 
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 1 Olivia Singquefield singled to center field on just the third pitch of the game and scored on Katie Collin's bomb over the left field fence. 
TOP 3 Katie Collins reached after being hit by a pitch and scored on a fielder's choice ball through the middle of the infield. Harlee Williams doubled to centerfield to tack up two more runs to pad UNG's lead out to 3-0
TOP 4 The Nighthawks put up two more runs in the inning off of back-to-back singles, as well as a throwing error from the Braves. 
TOP 6 The first four batters for North Georgia all reached base safely, included two via RBI singles. The Nighthawks put the final insurance run on the board with a RBI from Marley Stowers.

The Braves will be back in action on Saturday against Young Harris (14-8, 0-0 PBC) for Lace Up For Pediatric Cancer Day at the UNCP Softball Field. First pitch of the twinbill is scheduled for noon and admission is free.
