Young Harris Sweeps Softball In PBC Action

PEMBROKE – Young Harris registered 17 hits on the afternoon, including 15 singles, to key a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader sweep of the UNC Pembroke softball team on Saturday afternoon at the UNCP Softball Field. The Braves dropped game one, 2-1, and lost the second game of the twinbill, 10-1 in five innings.
 
The setbacks pushed the losing streak for the Braves (8-16, 0-4 PBC) out to eight games, including four-straight defeats in league play. It was the fourth win in the last six outings for the Mountain Lions (16-8, 2-0) who successfully opened up league play with Saturday's sweep.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
TOP 4 MaddieUrquiola walked to lead off the frame, moved into position on a sacrifice bunt and eventually scored on a one-out single from Emily Harris. 
TOP 6 The Mountain Lions loaded the bases with by singling in each of their first three at-bats of the frame. Jill Torres's legged out an infield single to the left side and sent one Mountain Lion home. The Braves, however, were able to escape the bases-loaded jam. 
BOT 6 Mary Sells got the offense rolling with a standup double and advanced to third on a Tatum Brummitt fly out. Sells crossed home with a hard-hit ball to the shortstop by Jessica Auld. 
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 1 Kristan Lizardi and Biz Walters hit consecutive singles with two outs showing, and a double from Jill Torres in the next at-bat put two runs on the board for Young Harris.
BOT 1 Rendi Wetherington hopped aboard via a one-out single up the middle and advanced to second on a passed ball. She eventually scored on a RBI single from Alex Watkins that cut UNCP's deficit in half. 
TOP 2 Grace Botti tallied a one-out single to set the table for Maddie Uriquiola who hit a bomb over the centerfield fence. The Mountain Lions loaded the bases, but UNCP was able to get out of the inning without any more damage. 
TOP 3 Young Harris loaded the bases again with its first four at-bats, and then utilized a costly fielding error by the Black & Gold, as well as a RBI single, to push its advantage out to 6-0.
TOP 4 The Mountain Lions loaded the bases with their first four at-bats. An eight-pitch at bat from Maddie Uriquiola resulted in a RBI walk, and a sac fly from Morgan Curley in the next at-bat added to the total. 
TOP 5 Young Harris put two of its first three batters aboard via walk, and took a 7-0 lead on a sacrifice fly to deep left field. The Mountain Lions scored their final run of the contest on an ill-timed wild pitch.
