Young Harris Sweeps Series-Opening Twinbill With Baseball

PEMBROKE – Visiting Young Harris pounded out a combined 29 hits and produced six multi-run innings to key a series-opening doubleheader sweep of the UNC Pembroke baseball team on Saturday at Sammy Cox Field. The Mountain Lions rallied late to take game one, 11-6, and then used a big first inning to fuel an 8-2 win in the nightcap.
 
The setbacks marked the fifth- and sixth-straight Peach Belt Conference losses for the Braves (7-9, 1-7 PBC) who registered a win at Augusta in their league opener on February 15. The Mountain Lions (11-6, 4-2 PBC) have now captured five-straight outings.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
TOP 2 Young Harris broke a 2-2 tie and took the lead for good on Tucker Greer's one-out RBI single through the right side. The Mountain Lions used consecutive two-out RBI singles later in the frame to push their lead out to 5-2.
BOT 5 The Braves got RBI knocks in consecutive at-bats to plate a pair of runs in the fifth and cut their deficit back to 7-5. Luke Jackson started the scoring on a run-scoring double down the left field line that plated River Ryan from second base.
TOP 8 The Mountain Lions capitalized on a pair of ill-timed errors by the Braves to score three runs, including two of the unearned variety. Tristin Smith capped the scoring in the frame with a double-play ball that brought T.J. Byrd scurrying home from third base with the 10-5 lead.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 1 The first five batters for Young Harris all recorded base hits, and the Mountain Lions plated six runs in the opening frame to steal the early momentum. Starter Davis Hurd recorded the first out of the inning on Cole Jackson's sacrifice fly that gave the visitors a 5-0 lead.
