Georgia College Uses Big Innings To Even Series With Baseball

PEMBROKE – Georgia College sent a dozen batters to the plate to fuel a 5-run second inning, and then added four insurance runs in the fifth, on the way to a series-tying 9-6 victory over the UNC Pembroke baseball team in the front half of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader at Sammy Cox Field.

The setback snapped a two-game home win streak for the Braves (15-13, 5-9 PBC), while putting an end to a three-game skid away from home for the Bobcats (14-12, 8-7).

KEY INNINGS
TOP 2 Shane Connahan and Jayson Cook both climbed aboard via one-out singles to get something going for the Bobcats who took their first lead of the contest with the next at-bat thanks to a two-run triple from Cam Hill. Austin Holloway (double) and Cal Gentry (single) both followed with RBI knocks, and Gentry eventually crossed the plate by stealing third base, and then advancing home on an ensuing throwing error by the hosts.
BOT 3 Bobby Dixon and Zach Ghelfi both reached via error to lead off the frame, and Luke Jackson's RBI single gave UNCP its first run of the game. Connor Grainger's bases-loaded RBI single with one out showing pushed across UNCP's second run of the inning, but a double play moments later slammed the door on the rally.
BOT 4 Bobby Dixon and Zach Ghelfi tacked up two-out singles to get a pair of runners aboard for the Braves and set the table for a 3-run dinger from Luke Jackson that knotted the game up.
TOP 5 The Bobcats sent their entire order to the plate in the fifth, and took the lead for good on a one-out sacrifice fly from Shane Connahan. A costly error on a play at the plate opened the door for three more runs in the frame, including two on consecutive RBI knocks by Cam Hill and Austin Holloway.
BOT 8 Connor Grainger led off the inning with a double, and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of River Ryan that capped the scoring in the ballgame.
