Georgia College Holds Off Baseball In Series Rubber Match

PEMBROKE – Georgia College pounded out 17 hits and scored 11 times behind a seven-armed pitching staff, but had to hold off a late-inning rally by the UNC Pembroke baseball team to secure a series-clinching 11-10 victory over the Braves in the nightcap of a Saturday doubleheader at Sammy Cox Field.

It was the third loss in the last four outings for the Braves (15-14, 5-10 PBC) who will open up a four-game road trip on Tuesday when they make the short trip north to battle Wingate. The result marked just the second time this month that the Bobcats (15-12, 9-7) have strung together consecutive wins.

KEY INNINGS
TOP 1 Cam Hill (hit by pitch) and Austin Holloway (single) both reached to lead off the game for Georgia College, but it was a one-out sacrifice fly from Wesley Wommack that gave the Bobcats their first lead of the contest.
BOT 1 Luke Jackson singled to lead off the frame for the Braves, and Ethan Baucom hammered a one-ball offering from Georgia College starter Colin LoCurto off the foul pole in right field.
BOT 2 River Ryan tripled to the gap in left field to lead things off for the Braves who pushed their lead out to 3-1 on Jarratt Mobley's RBI double moments later. Zach Ghelfi's sacrifice fly eventually brought Mobley racing home from third base, and the hosts made it a 5-1 game on a two-out RBI single from Trevor Clemons.
TOP 4 Wesley Wommack led off the frame with a single, but UNCP starter Tanner Routh sat down each of the next two Bobcats via strikeout. Eric Furphy, however, laced Routh's first offering into right field to take up the second run of the game for the visitors.
TOP 5 Two costly fielding errors and a pair of passed balls by the Braves opened the door for two runs for Georgia College in the fifth. Jayson Cook reached on an error and eventually scored on an ill-timed passed ball. Cam Hill hit a single through the left side and later scored on a passed ball as well.
BOT 5 Luke Jackson singled to lead off the home half of the fifth and moved into position on a wild pitch minutes later. Trevor Clemons reached via a well-placed bunt, and Jackson scored when an errant throw on the play sailed into foul territory.
TOP 6 The Bobcats pulled to within a run on a one-out RBI single from Austin Holloway, and then took advantage of a pair of defensive errors by the Black & Gold to push across three more runs and take the lead for good. Cam Hill scored the game-tying run on costly error, and Garrett Green followed with a two-run single that gave the Bobcats an 8-6 advantage.
TOP 8 Wesley Wommack (double) and Garrett Green (single) both reached on one-out safeties, and Eric Furphy gave the visitors a 9-7 lead with a RBI single to the gap in left field. Shane Connahan's two-run single with two outs showing on the right field scoreboard padded the advantage out to four runs, 11-7.
BOT 8 UNCP loaded the bases with its first three at-bats, but could only push across one run on the shoulders of a costly wild pitch by the Bobcats.
BOT 9 River Ryan drew a one-out walk to get something going for the hosts, and Bobby Dixon capped the scoring on the weekend when he crushed a ball over the trees in left field two batters later.
