Hot Bats Give Softball PBC Sweep At USC Aiken

AIKEN, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke softball team pounded out 24 hits, including eight extra-base hits, to fuel a Peach Belt Conference sweep of USC Aiken on Saturday afternoon. The Braves won game one, 7-2, and captured game two of the twinbill, 11-6.
 
The results marked the first conference sweep of the season for the Braves (13-19, 2-6 PBC) who have now captured eight of the last 10 matchups in the series with the Pacers. The setbacks snapped a three-game win streak for the Pacers (15-21, 1-9 PBC) who fell to 9-9 at home this season.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
TOP 1 Rendi Wetherington led off the frame with a standup double down the left field line and Mary Sells knocked a RBI single to score Wetherington. Alex Watkins singled to score Sells and make it a 2-0 game. 
BOT 1 Holly Daum got the offense started for the Pacers with a leadoff single up the middle and advanced to second on a sac bunt. Daum scored the only run of the inning, however, after an ill-timed fielding error by the Braves. 
TOP 2 Rendi Wetherington cranked out a two-run homer to right field to pad the lead out to 4-1. 
TOP 4 Kaitlynn Norton reached on a single to left field and advanced to second on an error. Lauren Hillbourn singled up the middle to add an insurance run for the Braves. 
BOT 5 Sarah Sams smacked a triple down the right field line and eventually scored on a single from Maci Hutto. 
TOP 6 Kaitlynn Norton (double) and Rendi Wetherington (single) both reached safely to set up Mary Sells who plated both on a two-run double to left center field.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 2 Jordan Adcox sent a two-ball offering over the left field fence to put the UNCP on the board first. Kaitlynn Norton drew a walk, made her way around the bases thanks to a hard-hit single from Lauren Hillbourn and eventually scored on a wild pitch. 
TOP 3 Rendi Wetherington smacked a single through the left side and stole second on the next pitch. A single from Alex Watkins scored Wetherington, followed by three more singles and a fielder's choice that stretched the lead out to 6-0.
BOT 3 Courtney Strauus hit the first pitch she saw over the fence in centerfield to chip away at the hefty lead.
TOP 4 Alex Watkins produced a two-run RBI single to center field, but Jessica Auld cleared the bases with a two-run dinger over the fence in left field.
BOT 4 Hannah Price doubled down the left field line and scored on a single through the left side from Sydney Burk.
TOP 5 Rendi Wetherington continued the offensive surge for the Braves with a solo homer to left field.
BOT 5 Courtney Strauus led the frame off with a walk and advanced to second on a fielding error by the Braves. Back-to-back doubles for the Pacers produced three runs and helped the Pacers trim their deficit back to 11-5.
BOT 7 With an infield single followed by a single to center field put Pacers on the corners with one out. A sac fly to right field plated one run, but the Pacers comeback was halted with a stikeout moments later.

The Braves will return home on Tuesday to take on Francis Marion (23-14, 2-6 PBC) at the UNCP Softball Field on I-Scream for Softball Day. The first pitch of the twinbill is scheduled for 3 p.m.
